Cabbie wins out-of-court settlement thewestonmercury! NORTH Somerset Council has settled out-of-court with a disgruntled taxi driver who took legal action against it. The unitary authority yesterday (Weds) agreed to compensate a cabbie who fought against a condition in its taxi policy that meant he could only carry five passengers rather then six. Councillors acted on officers' recommendations and agreed to pay the cab driver £750 to cover legal expenses at a planning and regulatory committee. Previously, the cab driver had lodged an appeal, backed by the National Private Hire Association, against the ruling at North Somerset Courthouse in St Georges. Last night councillors amended the taxi policy and also agreed to write to the Department for Transport requesting that it reviews its own best practice guidelines regarding getting in and out of taxis. This is the not the first time the authority has had to amend its taxi policy. It was initially changed in February after taxi drivers complained about the new measures, and then again in March after the council realised it would lose almost £200,000 over five years if it agreed to a three or five year licence for taxi drivers. |
