From; Letters to The Fenland Citizen Hackney Carriage Drivers Have Done A Sterling Job 25th September 2008 The report on cabbies in last week's Citizen made interesting reading. Hackney carriage drivers take public safety extremely seriously. It was the Hackney carriage drivers who some time ago notified the council of illegal taxis operating in this town for which next to nothing was done. Hackney drivers in the district have done a sterling job in this area, despite not knowing all the bye-laws that affect them. I have never been given a copy in all the years I have been a driver. Maybe the officers of Fenland Council should seek the opinion of the people who use Hackney carriages in a satisfaction survey. Lastly, who is the Fenland Council spokesman who states that Hackney carriage drivers would be able to take part in school transport and social services work with a unified licence putting them in a win, win situation trying to fool? We have our badges from county that allow us to do this type of work and have been proudly doing it for years. Maybe we ought to bring back the old jobsworth hat from Esther Ranzten's programme "That's Life" – it seems as though some officers of the council are falling over themselves for the right to wear it.
