Taxi Fares Set To Rise 26th September 2008 Taxi fares in Whitby are to rise after Scarborough Council agreed to change the tariffs in response to rising fuel costs. However, the council stopped short of linking taxi fares automatically to the price of fuel, saying it would not be fair on the public. The Scarborough and District Taxi Association requested a rise and the councillors agreed in the light of recent significant increases in fuel costs, the requested increase was a reasonable one. The fare for a standard journey of 2.5 miles would increase by 3.7% in the day and by 3.2% at night. It means a standard flag drop in the day would cost £3.20 for the first sixth of a mile with a 20p increase at set intervals after that. At night the flag drop will start at £3.60. The members reasons for not adopting the two-stage fuel escalator, which would have linked the fares to fuel prices, was there would not be any advertising of a price increase when the target cost of fuel was reached – the rise would be automatically instigated – and no opportunity for members of the public to make representations. The changes in taxi fares will come into effect on 31 October after the public have been consulted on the changes. Source; Whitby Gazette |

£3.20 for a sixth of a mile; nice! Do they have someone at the front of the rank with a club knocking the punters out and putting them in the cabs. FFS £3.20 and 20p a click and I thought GBC was Dick Turpin |

Of course it could be unreasonable as well - more info required I think. |
