Unsafe taxis suspended in stop-check operation

FIVE taxis were suspended immediately by Chiltern District Council as part of a safety stop check operation, it was revealed today.
On Tuesday 23 September 20 vehicles were stopped during the operation, which ran from 10am to 1pm as part of an on-going project, enforced by Thames Valley Safer Road project officers.
The five vehicles, which were given immediate suspensions, are no longer allowed to operate as taxi or private hire vehicles.
Five others received delayed suspensions by CDC to repair body damage and will be allowed to trade again after repairs have been done.
Roads policing officers, Chiltern District Council’s licensing officers and the Vehicle Operator Agency were also involved.
PC Ian Leyland, who took part in the operation, said: “Unfortunately we had to take a lot of the vehicles checked off the road for having various mechanical defects such as bald tyres, broken suspension springs and defective steering and braking components.
“The agencies involved worked well in ensuring we were maintaining our duty of care to the public to ensure that the taxi and private hire vehicles on the road are safe to operate.
"I’d like to reassure the public that most taxi and private hire vehicles are safe and fully licensed but we plan further checks of this nature to ensure standards are maintained.”
Councillor Noel Brown, Cabinet Member for community safety said: "Chiltern has a long history of ensuring for the benefit of the public that the taxis (hackney carriages) and private hire vehicles it licenses are safe and legally on the road.
"Working with the operators and the various agencies helps ensure that high standards are maintained.”
