Taxi Boss Gives Schools A Fare Deal

1st October 2008

A taxi boss has made a fare fundraising deal with two South Tyneside schools.

Until the end of this year, 10p from every fare taken by Marsden and Whitburn Taxi drivers will go into a fund to be shared between two secondary schools.

The idea was the brainchild of taxi firm boss Ray Hunter, who is keen to plough cash back into the community.

He decided the cash would be best spent at Whitburn C of E School and Harton Technology School, in South Shields.

The firm is hoping to raise about £1,300, which will be split between the schools, before continuing to fundraise for another good cause in the new year.

Ken Gibson, headteacher at Harton Technology College, in Lisle Road, said: "I applaud Whitburn and Marsden Taxis, who approached the school and made me aware of their very kind gesture to give something back to the community.

"Any donations received will be passed on to worthwhile causes, which will be determined by the student members of the school's charity board.
"I wish the taxi firm continued success in the future."

Paula Williams, headteacher at Whitburn C of E School, in St Nicholas Avenue, added: "This very generous offer by Mr Hunter is timely for us, as we are trying to raise almost £4,000 to fund a container full of school equipment to be shipped to Lesotho, in South Africa.

"We are very lucky to be moving into a new school, with new equipment and resources, next spring and so wanted to send some of our current kit there.

"Half of the money we receive will be used in this way. The other half will be used to add to a fund – established by our marvellous PTA – to support pupils where there is particular financial hardship at home, to aid the purchase of items such as uniform, PE kit etc.

"Our thanks go to Mr Hunter and Whitburn and Marsden Taxis and their customers."

Mr Hunter said: "We wanted to put something back to where we work, and thought school funds would be a good idea.

"Times are hard for everyone, but this way they are giving to a charity just by taking a trip they would be doing anyway."

The firm is hoping to continue the fundraising efforts in the new year.
Contact Whitburn and Marsden Taxis, on 454 8800 or 529 3555, if you have a good cause to raise funds for.
