Dad Jailed For Cabbie Knife Threat 4th October 2008 A father who brandished a knife at a taxi driver has been jailed. Colin McCords had promised to pay the cabbie when he dropped him off at his door in the early hours of Saturday, February 23. But after the 36-year-old went into the house to collect the cash, he came back brandishing the weapon, a court heard yesterday. The driver was not hurt, but Judge Beatrice Bolton said the incident had "scared the living daylights" out of him. She added: "All he could think of was running away." Defence barrister Jane Foley said McCords, a father of two, had been drunk at the time of the incident and has never been in trouble with the police before. Judge Bolton jailed him for 10 months, saying: "I do not know what it was that led you to behave in the way you did. "In the middle of the night, you got a taxi home, and the perfectly decent taxi driver was prepared to take you home on condition you paid him when you got there. "You went into the house with a view, he thought, to bringing the money out, but instead you came out brandishing a knife. "It really is a very serious offence to do that." McCords, of Lea Avenue, Jarrow, had been found guilty by a jury of obtaining services by deception and having a bladed article after a trial earlier this year. Source; The Shields Gazette |
