This is an interesting development.

Title

Drivers will have no escape from new speed cameras

Times, October 9, 2008, 13

Webster, Ben

Date Oct 09, 2008

The Home Office is expected to approve new speed cameras by the end of January 2009 which will monitor drivers' average speed. Working in clusters, the cameras can be placed 15 miles apart and will automatically read number plates and transmit data instantly to a penalty processing centre. The cameras have been trialled by police in London and Northern Ireland.

Points for drivers speeding in EU

EUROPEAN UNION - ROAD TRAFFIC

Daily Telegraph

Samuel, Henry

Date Oct 07, 2008

France has indicated it will enact new European rules to stop foreign motorists flouting its speed limits. Dominique Bussereau, the French Transport Minister, suggested 900,000 German drivers and 550,000 Britons are caught on French speed cameras each year, and responsible for 27 per cent of all speeding offences in the country. Mr Bussereau will call for a Europe-wide number plate exchange system to allow those caught breaking road traffic laws to be punished in their home nation.

it wont really stop speeding, Two things can happen here, one is if you have a Car like a Skoda with the Average speed over the journey Milage shown you get to realise you can drive like a bloody lunatic and still only end up with an average speed of something like 54 MPH over the Journey, thats on Roads with corners and Hills etc. Itd be Different on Motorways though.

the other thing would be for TOM TOM or the likes to design a cheap Dash mounted Average speed Indicator (not a ful Sat Nav) that can be set at trip start or even several trips within one Overall Trip. This you could Hit at the First Camera and it would Keep you well informed as to whether you need to slow Down to keep legal or whether youve some Excess speed in hand. Tom Tom would make a mint out of a Cheap accurate device. if your wanting to do 120MPh...you just need stop for a cup of Tea or a pee to use up the Mean Average speed excess.

Obviously these Cameras will have folk Crawling along at ridicously slow speeds for fear of getting penalty points and this could be more dangerous than a safer higher speed. its so bloody obvious to even a Blind man that theses things are Purely to generate Income, even though Id bet a quid that they wont reduce accidents by any Noticable Margin and only Cause Gridlock by Petrified drivers. an Increase risk of accident would be caused by folk using their Brain as an Onboard Computer, trying to work out their Average speed and through over concentration on advanced Mathematics easily end up driving straight into the back of someone else thinking even harder.

The idea is to slow traffic down for safety reasons

then the bast**** can invoke a congestion charge and get you anyway

This is the new ANPR camera sytem one of which has just been installed on the A43 at Stamford The sytem will track EVERY single vehicle movement on EVERY SINGLE A road and motorway and it will be operating early next year

I am told that the real reason is to track suspected criminals and terrorists movement but the sytem is also capable of tracking any untaxed cars or uninsured cars

As for tracking speeding motorists I doubt they have the resources yet to do so and since on any given A road there are several speed restictions and other obstacles to high speed your average speed will be below the national limit and proving that you broke the speed limit would be difficult
