A Scarborough man has been arrested after posing as a licensing inspector to gain access to pubs. which he later burgled.

After accusing the premises of watering down lager, letting in drunk and aggressive customers and selling unbranded spirits, the bogus official even threatened to close down some of the pubs before later returning to burgle the property.

The incidents happened in the Darlington area.

Steve Pogson, Scarbor-ough’s Health and Community Safety Manager, said: “Council officers always produce identification before an inspection and I urge licensees to always ask to see identification.

“If anyone is visited by a bogus inspector or is suspicious of this type of activity, they should report it to the council’s licensing team or police.”

He added: “The same cautiousness should be adopted by taxi or private hire operators when they are approached by inspectors, as we recently had a case where someone posing as a licensing officer sent a driver home for wearing tracksuit bottoms.”
