'Beep ban' imposed on taxis Wednesday, October 29, 2008 Taxis have been banned from beeping to let people know they are outside because it lowers their image. Transport chiefs in Lancashire also want to introduce dress and behaviour codes, according to the Lancashire Evening Post. But the idea has not gone down well with taxi drivers who described it as a "stupid" ban. They say banning them from beeping when they arrive to pick up a customer could leave them vulnerable to violence on some of Preston's toughest estates. They want to stay in their car for personal safety. Mick Rooney, who runs Ribbleton Taxis, said: "The job is getting more and more dangerous. As soon as you get out of the vehicle you're at risk. I will continue sounding my horn – I'll end up in court about it." According to the paper, Mike Thorpe, of Preston Council, said anyone breaking the rule would get written advice, followed by a written warning and then called before the taxi sub-committee. |

In the uk it's an offence to sound the horn of a car between 23:30 and 07:00 or at any time when the car's stationary unless another vehicle poses a danger (Highway code rule 112) |

CC If you read my comments again, you will see I said company a one man band is a sole trader not a company. A sole trader can quite easily text or phone his passenger upon arrival at the public house or shopping centre or if its from a house/office he could get off his fat ar*e and knock on the door which is a bit more proffessional than tooting your horn. Until the local PH where I live got ring back, the drivers were tooting their horns 24/7 at all times of day & night. |

I dont toot my horn, I dont have call back, I will sit outside the house and if the customer doesnt come out within two minutes I'll knock on the door, if the door aint answered by the time I get back to the cab, I leave. Saying that we dont have tower blocks here. I personally dont like ring back /call back, because IMO the customer should know if they phone a taxi / ph will arrive. Those drivers who do toot horns should be shot, as you say, they are unprofessional lazy bleeders. CC |

I've never had to wait more than a few seconds on any of my passengers.

But not all punters know exactly when they will arrive, if it's mobbed it could be 2 mins or 60 mins. From a driver's point of view call back is the best thing that these data firms have ever come up with. |

Nowt wrong with a Beep, if its an offence to do when the Vehicles stationary then do it as you creep slowly forward in gear...the Customer often says "give us a Blast on the horn when you arrive".. Once the Local Mugging Brigade get to know that its the Norm that Cabbies will leave their Vehicles to go Knock on a Door it will fast make the drivers an easy target for which the Thugs only need ring up to pre Rob them. Catchy name that " Dial a Mug, the Taxi service for Muggers" |
