Hi all,

We have been operating excec and wedding cars for a number of years now and have recently decided to try our hand at operating a couple of taxis.

We are after advice and info on the best way of employing drivers.

I am led to believe that it is no longer possible to use self employed drivers on a percentage split, that they need to be 'Employed'.

If this is the case, what is the going rate for taxi drivers etc

All help and advice welcomed.

I guess they could be Self Employed and that would get around that issue...

Nope!

If we are supplying the car, insurance etc it is no longer legal to use self employed drivers continuously.

Rent the car to them instead of a split bag.

I'm not sure that is the case.

As for the % of split, 50/50 is widely used, or you can rent them the car by the day/week.

plate a HC in your area (be it Lti or saloon) and get a badged driver in it at the NMW, if it works it works, every other business in the land has too....

I have always been told the 'simple test' is who buys the fuel!!

However the tax authorities do seem to take a harder line than they have in the past and it is becoming more arduous for the business to 'justify' itself 'self-employed' status.

It does seem that it is still feasible to make most 'arrangements' legitimate but you just have to be a little cuter than before and pay more accountancy bills.

Standard practice these days seems to be operators creating two companies, both that have relationships with 'driver'. One company is responsible for 'renting' the vehicle, whilst a second company 'provides work through a radio circuit'.

On the other side of the discussion. If you are expecting to do a large amount of 'account' work the VAT question becomes less compelling.

As for how much an employed driver would cost. My experience is that it is a lot less than a 'self employed' driver on commission would 'expect' to make. But employment means embezzlement issues, holiday pay, Statutory sick pay (as a minimum) and a host of other employment red tape.
