Fears grow over Merseyside taxi rapes
Nov 7 2008
TWO women have been raped by a taxi driver taking them home at night sparking fears of further attacks.
Merseyside police today warned women to be vigilant after the attacks in Liverpool and Birkenhead.
They stressed they were not investigating a serial rapist, and while there were similarities between the attacks, they could not be linked or confirmed as being committed by the same offender.
However, warning emails and text messages have spread throughout the city over recent months warning women to be on their guard.
The threat has even been raised in meetings held by groups connected to Liverpool council and Liverpool Primary Care Trust.
Police confirmed they are investigating two rapes which happened in September in Aigburth, and another near Birkenhead.
The first happened at around 12.15am on Sunday, September 20, when a woman, 32, from Widnes, hailed a black hackney cab on Wood Street, in Liverpool city centre.
When the cab reached Aigburth Drive, close to the deserted and dark Sefton Park, he stopped the vehicle and raped her.
The sex attacker is described as white, around 30, fat and bald.
The second rape happened nine at 1am, on September 29 when a 22-year-old woman was picked up in a hackney cab with two friends in Bridge Street, Birkenhead.
The friends were dropped off, but when he reached the third woman’s address he did not stop.
Instead, he drove to the Durley Industrial estate, near to the M53, outside of Birkenhead, near Woodchurch.
He stopped the taxi and raped the terrified woman.
In this second case, police say the attacker was white, aged 35-40, around 6ft, fat, with stubble and a local accent.
He was wearing a Liverpool FC shirt and smelt strongly of deodorant.
Det Supt Colin Leeman said: “I am aware that recently there have been a number of texts and emails sent to members of the public which claim there is a 'serial rapist' who picks up groups of women and rapes the last woman in the cab.
“I would like to reassure members of the public that this is not the case and we are not investigating a series of rapes with established links.
“However, we would never be complacent and would take this opportunity to urge all women to take care when they are out at night.”
“Be streetwise and try not to put yourself in the position where you might be vulnerable.”
The warning messages, now common knowledge among women in Liverpool, claim the taxi driver responsible carries condoms in his cab.
It also says that he drives both a hackney and private hire vehicle, although a hackney was the vehicle involved in the two reported attacks.
If anyone has information they should contact the Rape Support Unit on 0151-777 1382, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
