Council approves new taxi fleet

A NEW style of hackney carriage will soon be appearing after Trafford's Licensing Sub-Committee approved an updated design.

For reasons of recognition and safety, Trafford has until now only licensed London-style black cabs, but now residents will also see the new Mercedes Vito picking up fares.

The Mercedes taxis will be black with a front illuminated sign and side livery.

In September the council, with Lancashire County Cricket Ground, showcased a number of taxis to allow the sub-committee and the hackney carriage trade to view the range of vehicles licensed nationally as black cabs.

Chairman of the public protection sub-committee, Cllr Brian Rigby, said: "The showcase of cabs back in September was extremely useful to the committee and helped us see the benefits of what each cab could offer - and the Mercedes Vito particularly impressed us, having the same turning circle as London-style taxis.

"The Mercedes Vito’s, like the traditional style black cabs, will be easily recognisable to people as hackney carriages due to their livery, colour and illuminated sign."

Would that have to be a Judicial Review?

Obviously it woud rest on the ruling.

If a judge said the decision to only license vehicles with a specific turning circle discriminated against the disabled under the 1995 act, or it was unreasonable to only license vehicles with a specific turning circle, then obviously any council who did not take heed of such a judgement would be rather foolish.

I dont think the group would win if it went to court, IMO they are planting their hopes firmly on a change of policy.
