The new electric taxi being developed by LTI is to be billed as zero emissions and a rate of 5p a mile.
When you consider the batteries only last for an approximate 500 charges, sometimes less, and have to be replaced at a cost of approx £2000, it certainly bumps up the cost per mile.
There was a strong rumour that the batteries for the electric taxi would only be available for hire. Plus the government will still want their pound of flesh to make up for the loss of revenue from derv sales.

Also Zero emissions, is not electricity produced by burning fossil fuel.
How is all that extra electricity going to be generated. Coal, oil, gas?

You've just got to love the greenies belief about a "zero emission" vehicle.
As long as the emissions don't get anywhere near their lungs, they're not bothered.
When using electricity generated by burning fossil fuels, do electric vehicles emit more or less nastiness than their internally combusting brethren taking into account the production of the batteries and the process of obtaining electricity?
I'm of the opinion that the user of this type of transport should have to suffer the emissions, of their chosen method of transportation. Should we do away with the national grid and get Battersea power station back up and running with smoke billowing from the four chimneys.
See how many greenies want to cycle along Chelsea embankment then!

50,000 miles as against 8,300 litres of fuel at 6 miles a litre. How much does it cost to charge the battery?

If someone could invent a generator that was powered by computer keyboard strokes, I reckon you'd go someway to solving the current energy needs of North London MrA ! :D

Don't forget to factor in the taxman's lump of wedge. When he finds out there's a £5000 differential he will put some sort of Taxi on the batteries.

Also the range of these cabs is given to be 100 miles between charges.
Tested probably in daylight in summer on a test track.
Now add a taxi meter, headlights, radio, put the heater on plus windscreen wipers. See how far they go now!

Maybe a Generator run off the Elbow of a hormonal teenage Male sitting in the rear seat....you could get upwards of 50 Miles per copy of Playboy, as he slows down a quick trip to WH Smiths would be good for another few miles.

Its amazing the energy released from the turning of pages... :wink:
