Six arrested after swoop on Tyneside taxi office SUSPECTED drugs, a weapon and stolen goods were seized as police swooped on a Tyneside taxi office. Six men were arrested yesterday afternoon at Central Taxis’ premises in both Nile Street and Railway Terrace, North Shields, as officers searched 25 taxis. The Chronicle understands one of those in custody being quizzed is the firm’s owner, Graeme Kennedy. North Tyneside command area officers were involved in the strikes and it is understood North Tyneside council was aware of the operation. A CID spokesman said: "Six men were arrested yesterday afternoon after police carried out search warrants on suspicion of the handling of stolen goods at Central Taxis in North Shields at both offices, Nile Street and Railway Terrace. "Two men were arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon. One was bailed and the other cautioned. "Three have been bailed on suspicion of possessing class-A drugs." It is understood a weapon seized in one of the taxis was an extendable cosh. The drugs are thought to be cocaine and have been sent for analysis. Another man was given a fixed penalty notice for being drunk and disorderly in the office. The raid was pre-planned after intelligence was gathered on alleged criminal activities in the North Tyneside area. |
