TWO PRIVATE HIRE TAXI DRIVERS have been prosecuted for illegally trying to pick up passengers in Manchester city centre.

City Council licensing officers spotted Mohammed Shafiq trying to pick up passengers outside Bluu Bar on Thomas Street in the Northern Quarter, during a routine city centre patrol in the early hours of Sunday 4 May.

Javed Elahi was spotted trying to pick up passengers outside the Printworks on March 8 and May 4 this year.

Councillor Richard Cowell said: "We are doing everything we can to crack down on unscrupulous drivers who try to make extra money with no regard for their passengers' safety.”

No doubt the council are of the opinion that if they set up the private hire taxi rank themselves then it is perfectectly legal. Xmas is fast approaching lets see what happens in the coming weeks.

I can't understand why he didn't stick around? Perhaps he knows all there is to know about taxi licensing or has other methods of keeping himself and his members up to date or it might be the case that when Manchester city council backtracked on the idea of private hire taxi ranks he was left with a position that he could no longer argue as being legal.

I hope he does come back because all opinions are welcome no matter what they might be.

No I think that individual went away when folks, even some PH folks, reminded him what the law of the land was.

But as JD said, it would be nice for him to come back and up-date us on the situation. :-$

No, he's never been in my cab.

Good fare though to Manchester, I could buy a house on your dodgy estate with that sort of cash.
