Quote:
Production at the mine, which was developed by British Coal at a cost of £320 million, is suffering because of three volcanic sills which lie above the coal seam. RJB said these sills had caused unusual fracturing, leading to damage to coalface equipment and water seepage, and that it had failed to beat the problem despite trying a number of alternative systems of mining.

Since coming into production in April 1995, Asfordby has produced 1.5 million tonnes of coal. Asked whether the company would appeal to the Government for financial assistance for the mine, a company spokesman said: "It is not a problem that can be solved by pouring money at into it. If it was, we would have done it by now."

That leaves Hatfield as the last one and they face a massive compensation claim after the slag heap destroyed a major railway line so will this be the end of coal mining in the UK ?

That will be coal that was cut out when they were in the stages of development which doesn't go down on the production sheets, can you see a rapid loading bunker anywhere??

Actually i think Scargill can shoulder a lot of the blame a more realistic approach to mine closures might have kept a lot of them going much longer instead of the using the miners as a political pawn in a game of politics

Thatcher was just spoiling for a fight, a chance to crack down on her hated adversaries on the left. Instead of reviling Scargill, the right should thank him. He handed her the working man's arse on a plate.

The rest is history.
