Scottish independence: Vote disorder reports 'exaggerated'
Brian Docherty Scottish Police Federation chairman Brian Docherty

The group which represents Scotland's police officers has strongly criticised "exaggerated rhetoric" about disorder in the referendum campaign.

The Scottish Police Federation said some reports in the media had given the "preposterous" impression of impending "societal disintegration".

The federation said this was completely untrue and the debate had been "robust but overwhelmingly good-natured".

It also called for "level heads" and "respect" before Thursday's vote.

Federation chairman Brian Docherty said his members "should not be used as a political football" during the campaign.

'Tolerant citizens'

"As I have previously stated, the referendum debate has been robust but overwhelmingly good -natured," he said.

"It was inevitable that the closer we came to the 18th of September passions would increase but that does not justify the exaggerated rhetoric that is being deployed with increased frequency.

"Any neutral observer could be led to believe Scotland is on the verge of societal disintegration yet nothing could be further from the truth."

Mr Docherty said Scotland's citizens were "overwhelmingly law abiding and tolerant" and it was "preposterous to imply" that they would abandon these "virtues" by "placing a cross in a box".

He continued: "At this time it is more important than ever that individuals, be they politicians, journalists or whoever, should carefully consider their words, maintain level heads and act with respect.

"Respect is not demonstrated by suggesting a minority of mindless idiots are representative of anything.

"One of the many joys of this campaign has been how it has awakened political awareness across almost every single section of society. The success enjoyed by the many should not be sullied by the actions of the few."

Mr Docherty appeal for police officers to "be kept free from the distractions of rhetoric better suited to the playground that the political stump".

He added: "If crime has been committed it will be investigated and dealt with appropriately but quite simply police officers have better things to do than officiate in spats on social media and respond to baseless speculation of the potential for disorder on and following polling day."

Yes campaigner Dad's fury as son narrowly avoids chair thrown from balcony by No supporter

Sep 01, 2014 00:01
By Mark McGivern

SCHOOLBOY Kieran Loudon was campaigning with dad Gavin alongside independence stalwart Jim Sillars in Kirkcaldy, Fife, when a chair came crashing down from the balcony.

A YES campaigner dad has called in police after a chair was allegedly thrown from a balcony at his eight-year-old son.

Schoolboy Kieran Loudon was campaigning with dad Gavin alongside independence stalwart Jim Sillars when a chair came crashing down from the balcony.

Gavin said it was thrown by a woman who had been heckling former SNP deputy leader Sillars about the NHS.

Kieran was forced to jump out of the way to avoid it and was left badly upset, he added.

The incident happened in Kirkcaldy, Fife, where Sillars had taken his MargoMobile, his campaign vehicle dedicated to his late wife Margo MacDonald.

While Sillars was talking to gathered locals on a megaphone, a woman on a second-storey terrace appeared to take exception to the debate, Gavin said.

He added: “We had been to a christening earlier on and both Kieran and myself were in kilts.

“While Jim was making a public address I became aware of a woman ranting about Alex Salmond wrecking the NHS in Scotland.

“I tried to tell her that it was the Tory cuts that were behind problems in the NHS but she was having none of it.

“She threw the chair down and she came very close to hitting my son, who was really upset.”

Gavin said the current climate was like nothing he has experienced in the last three years of campaigning. He said: “Things have gone crazy but it’s not all about attacks on No campaigners.

“I felt I had to make to complaint to the police because this could easily have ended quite seriously.”

A police spokesman said: “We are investigating an alleged incident and inquiries are ongoing.”

that's a bit harsh considering the propaganda from both sides.

I spotted this one today on twitter;

Image

the photo basically said this was taken in Glasgow on 17th Sept.

Please notice the snow on the hills - I don't think its snowed in Scotland yet, and certainly not anywhere near Glasgow.

I think the monument is the McDonald Monument in Glencoe. The image below seems to confirm this.

Ironically the photo displays a breath-taking ignorance of Scottish history - the massacre took place years before the treaty of union.

As I was walking to the polling Station today there was an elderly gent walking in front of me proudly wearing his kilt, a quick assumption by the elderly yes campaigner turned sour as she gave him the thumbs up, he snarled back I'm voting no but I'm no wanting you lot (his words) thinking you have sole rights to our national dress, an exchange of words followed and I thought to myself if this is how the 70 year old are behaving imagine what it will be like the night once the results start to filter through, I did have a wee chuckle tho
