It was something that needed doing. As for it being a mess, all anyone has to do is to look back 40 years+ and to pick the bones out of it. I am not suggesting that we go back 40 years, but the history/knowledge is there to be used as to how we managed very well prior to joining the EU. As I am writing this, I am watching Mark Carney talking up GB - incidently doing a good job in doing so.

the thing is though we won't say "no" to german cars unless they suddenly become very expensive compared to the equivalent Japanese/chinese and of course BMW has UK based production facilities which they could move to germany if we did threaten tarriffs
