No, I am saying that the Labour Government increased VAT on petrol from 12.5% to 25% in 1974.

Your figures are misleading. VAT has long been the Tories favorite way of raising revenue while cutting income tax.

VAT was brought in in 1973 by the then Conservative government at a rate of 10%.

The Labour government in July 1974 reduced the standard rate to 8% and introduced a new higher rate of 12.5% for petrol and some luxury goods.
In November 1974 Labour doubled the higher rate of VAT to 25%
In April 1976 this was reduced by Labour back to 12.5%.

The Thatcher Conservative government in 1979, abolished the higher 12.5% rate and introduced a unified rate of 15%
Since then it has been continually extended to include more things.

The 1991 Conservative government increased the standard rate to 17.5%
In 1993, the Conservative government extended VAT to domestic fuel and power at 8%, despite promising not to extend the scope of VAT during the 1992 general election.

1997 Labour reduced VAT on domestic fuel and power to 5%
Labour reduced the standard rate of VAT from 17.5% to 15% from 1 December 2008. and returned it to 17.5% from 1 January 2010

The current Conservative/liberal bawbags increased VAT to 20% a year later - having denied they would during the 2010 election.

So you are arguing for us to drive away businesses and jobs because they are synonymous with the conservative party by making us the most highly taxed country in Europe

Businesses create Jobs which creates tax revenues and spending power some of which goes into our pockets  it is a balance which has to be achieved even if you hate some of the people whose job it is to achieve it

The problem isn't neccessarily the policies but the trough that the politicians have their snout in which blinds them to some of the less desirable effects and the controls and balances which should be in place

I am stating as fact that Tories prefer VAT to income tax.
No doubt due to the fact that they have the largest incomes and consequently the highest tax liability.

When they actually pay tax, of course

Tax or Vat call it what you like - they are both taxes.

Originally tax was @33% with...........no VAT. The extremely highly paid used to get hammered with massive amounts so much so, the likes of Film stars/Top golfers went to tax havens.

Today we have a basic 20% on earnings and a further 20% on purchases so basically they have increased it to 40%!

The wealthy have had their reduced massively and are doing very nicely than you, and the rest (that is you and I), are far worse off than we have ever been, even though we are paying more.

VAT came along with the EEC ! When we never belonged to the EEC..............no VAT - happy days.

It is obvious the benefits of joining the EEC...............isn't it

VAT RATES TABLE

1972-73 8%

1973-74 8%

1974-75 15%

1975-76 15%

1976-77 15%

to be precise

we have 20% income tax AFTER THE FIRST £10,000 a year earnings

Earn £20000 and you will pay £2000 income tax wont you? (10%)

and 20% VAT (on VATable items) ........when we decide to spend on those goods

An excellent example of bending the facts to suit the case john

Do you really decide to heat your home, put clothes on your back or shoes on your feet? Most people would consider this essential.

Indeed. You prove your own point.

I never bend facts to win an argument.

Tax is very intricate in the sense that to get the full picture you would have to have all of the facts and figures to boot - Allowances are the key to how much tax you actually pay.

All I did was to show VAT figures of the day which is a back door tax, you then bring in a more recent higher allowance i.e 10K to try and indicate that tax has not gone up to 40%. You would have to build into the tax argument 1. wages of the day buying power i.e say 1973 - 2013. 2. Inflation over the period i.e from then to now. Do not forget VAT does not stand still, it is always a double whammy - the supplier puts their increase on, and then the gov puts theirs on and that is why they stand still and do nothing. I revise my 40% in monetary terms to be overall a whole lot higher, I would like to say I commend it to the "House" - but I cannot as it is grand theft on a daily basis.

To take a "Churchillian" tone.................Neverrrrr......Neverrrrr............have theyyyyy.......taxed usss...so much.
