Maybe this is a strange thing to say! When the Unions had the power to strike, people had more! and the economy was in better shape - basically one could say the Unions are an evil necessity.

Yes, I remember the winter of discontent and the 3 day week, we were certainly in better shape then.

I remember it well, and was directly financlally affected! Having said that - you need an organisation that is able to challenge Big Business/Governments, otherwise we will continue to be financially suppressed, and living through recession after recession caused by the greed from the top. Remember this - the wealth gap between those that have, and those that do not........is wider than ever - why do you think that happened?

John your right the Unions are of course necessary but "evil" definitely not, and the winter of discontent was all about the Labour Party at that time being infiltrated by that eras version of BLIAR Callaghan a right no good pillock!

Funnily enough i had no difficulty identifying exactly what BLIAR was when many sycophants in the party worshipped at his altar.

The country will always be a better place to live in when the Unions are powerful , at tyhe moment its being raped and pillaged and its predicted 200 pensioners a day will either starve or freeze to death this coming winter something no LEFT wing Labour government would allow!

Could you please provide some figures of how many pensioners died each day either by starving or freezing each year for the last 60 years so that we can see if the figures were any different under previous governments?

First and foremost it is a "Prediction" (fortunately not a fact), "Secondly" we have never been in the grip of the "Power" companies like we are now - so, there will be no data related to your question.

Were we not in the grip of the unions in the 70s which resulted in the 3 day week and power cuts? How many pensioners died because of this action?

The 3 day week was imposed by Ted Heath seem to remember he was a Tory and the power cuts were limited to 6 hours per session :D

Then he went for an election and got his arse kicked  Which led eventually to that toss pot Callaghan after Wilson did a bunk Then along came the evil orre Thatcher whose legacy were all still reaping Privatised everything rip off Britain :D :D :D

Grandad how many deaths a week would you find acceptable in 2013/14 ?????????

Some of us were there, down the pits till the poxy NUM decided THEY should run the country

They tried again in 1984 I seem to recall?

Quote:
The Three-Day Week was one of several measures introduced in the United Kingdom by the Conservative Government 1970–1974 to conserve electricity, the production of which was severely limited due to industrial action by coal miners.

By the middle of 1973, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) drawn from a workforce who almost wholly worked for the National Coal Board had encouraged their members to work to rule – as a result of imports being economically unattractive, coal stocks slowly dwindled. The global effect of the 1973 oil crisis also drove up the price of coal. The administration of Prime Minister Edward Heath entered into negotiations with the NUM, to no avail.

Arrested - for crimes against the UK Coal industry (while lining his own pockets)
