The 85 richest people on the planet have accumulated as much wealth between them as half of the world’s population, political and financial leaders have been warned ahead of their annual gathering in the Swiss resort of Davos.

Clearly in the countries where children are starving, they can't produce enough food. So if they had less children then there would be less of them to starve.

Grandad a nice simple view you have of the world,but unfortunately it doesn't work that way.Poverty,war are the main causes of hunger.There's more than enough food in the world to go round.You'll be telling us next the Irish 'famine' was because of too many children,or that China doesn't have starvation and malnutrition because they have a one child policy :roll: :roll:

I thought the Irish Famine was due to several years of crop failure due to potato blight. The Chinese one child policy is a relatively recent thing, closing the stable door way after the horse had already bolted.

Silly old me thinking it was because the poor Irish Catholics could not own land or get decent jobs.They had to grow potatoes on land rented of the gentry to try and feed their families.Grandad another untruth maybe you picked up in the Mail.As for Chinese one child policy being new or not (late 70s I think).Your point is ? People still starve in countrys weather you have one child or ten.It's hard for you to grasp I know but its the truth :wink:

There was potato blight and they depended on potatoes for food.But the Irish didn't have anything else hence the term "starving to death".As for the Grandad solution to "have less children,eradicate starvation" your a real modern day Geldof :lol: :lol:

"By the early 1840s, almost one-half of the Irish population—but primarily the rural poor—had come to depend almost exclusively on the potato for their diet, and the rest of the population also consumed it in large quantities. In 1845 Phytophthora arrived accidentally from North America, and that same year Ireland had unusually cool, moist weather, in which the blight thrived. This partial crop failure was followed by more devastating failures in 1846–49, as each year’s potato crop was almost completely ruined by the blight.

The British government’s efforts to relieve the famine were inadequate. Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel did what he could to provide relief in 1845 and early 1846, but under the Liberal cabinet of Lord John Russell, which assumed power in June 1846, the emphasis shifted to reliance on Irish resources and the free market, which made disaster inevitable. Much of the financial burden of providing for the starving Irish peasantry was thrown upon the Irish landowners themselves (through local poor relief). But because the peasantry was unable to pay its rents, the landlords soon ran out of funds with which to support them. British assistance was limited to loans, helping to fund soup kitchens, and providing employment on road building and other public works. Cornmeal imported from the United States helped avert some starvation, but it was disliked by the Irish, and reliance on it led to nutritional deficiencies. Despite these shortcomings, by August 1847 as many as three million people were receiving rations at soup kitchens. All in all, the British government spent about £8 million on relief, and some private relief funds were raised as well. Throughout the famine, many Irish farms continued to export grain, meat, and other high-quality foods."

Your ignorance of what it was really about doesn't surprise me.Have a read up on it when you've more than a minute to consult wiki or the mail.Read about the "poor law amendment" and the conservative c unts of tha time.Don't make a bigger tit of yourself than you allready have.
In 1846 to 1851 almost a million people died and even more emigrated because of the famine. Out of a population of eight million before the famine, almost one and a half million people emigrated. Many of those who emigrated, climbed abroad ships that were so unsafe they were commonly referred to as 'coffin ships.' Many more died en route to America and Canada. The poor had to fit in the spaces they could find and many ships were overcrowded and rampant with disease. It is estimated that some 100,000 people died en route to North America. The famine left a legacy of emigration that continued until recently. As many as seventy million people worldwide can claim Irish decent (Irish Diaspora). This means that not only did the famine effect Ireland, it also shaped the face of many nations.
