Cumbria will remain Scotland's closest friend, Alex Salmond to tell Carlisle meeting Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond is due to make a landmark speech in Cumbria tonight ahead of the referendum on Scottish independence on September 18. The Scottish National Party leader has deliberately chosen St George’s Day to deliver the message that an independent Scotland would retain strong links with the rest of the UK. He will say: “The ties that bind the nations of these islands will continue and flourish after Scotland becomes independent. “You will remain Scotland’s closest friends, as well as our closest neighbours. Following independence, the social union between the peoples of these islands will remain. “People would still live in Annan and work in Carlisle, or live in Penrith and work in Lockerbie. “Friends and family would continue to visit each other. We would still watch many of the same television programmes. “People from Scotland and England would still celebrate personal unions – by getting married in Carlisle Cathedral or perhaps by going to Gretna instead. “On Monday, there were gun salutes in Stirling, Edinburgh and London to mark the Queen’s birthday. “That would continue, since we would still share a monarchy with the rest of the United Kingdom – just as we did for a century before the Parliamentary Union of 1707, and just as 16 other Commonwealth countries do now. “Carlisle would still have strong trade and transport links with Scotland. We would continue to share the same currency. “And we would co-operate on the many issues where we share common interests.” The First Minister will also say that an independent Scotland will be a powerful economic counterweight to London, helping to rebalance growth across the British Isles. Mr Salmond will also announce a series of Borderlands economic forums when he deliver his speech to an invited audience of business people at the Fratry, Carlisle Cathedral. These would take place following a ‘yes’ vote in September’s referendum. Chancellor George Osborne said in March that an independent Scotland would not remain in a currency union with the rest of the UK – a view rejected by the SNP. Were Scotland to adopt a different currency, it would potentially create a headache for those who live on one side of the border and work on the other. http://www.newsandstar.co.uk/news/cumbr ... -1.1131360 |

A shame in many respects as it would revolutionise corrupt British politics just as the Scots managed to do with the "Poll tax". They (Scotland) hold an immense amount of power at the moment.........and will let it slip through their fingers

Like I've said many many times, let them go without a referendum. They've got no currency, they'll have no Health Service they'll have nothing. |

Quote: They've got no currency, they'll have no Health Service they'll have nothing. Not having £1.2 trillion of debt and rising, will soon put that right. As for currency I cannot see all of the fuss - the stone-age seemed to manage alright and never had the debt that we have today - the debt is a massive worry that could easily turn us into an Albania tomorrow. Just imagine a bankrupt government i.e NO money to pay anything (parts of the U.S have skirted that area), a currency that no one wants/worthless to you and I, meaning that unless you have mega means to fall back on.....you cannot get out of the country to get away from it. If I was a Scot and I have nothing against English people.......I would be out ASAP. English governments/the system are something else, and need changing big time, in fairness they are not indicative of English people. |

its an argument the English cannot possibly win - if the English want Scotland to stay, imo - say nowt ffs - each time you open yer gobs it puts another couple of percentage points to the yes vote. IMO the English don't understand Scots I mean, telling a Scot they wont exist without England, its like a red f*cking rag to a bull - and its also b*llocks, there's far more independent countries in a far worse position than Scotland would ever be ffs Scots are our nearest neighbours, closest friends and best allies - their part of a dysfunctional family of nations - but their a nation and the English forget that, and its insulting ffs - I mean, the English of all people......they don't even know what a nation is, they cant grasp an identity. |

Quote: and Cabby john what about yer Welsh mob??????????????// I think that you have to look at things realistically and go with what is a "Can Do", on that I believe the Scots can, providing they can keep their own politicians feet on the ground and the oncoming corruption in check.......then they will do very nicely. Wales! I suppose we could nationalise the "Water" (a different type of oil revenue) (I guess that is not going to happen) Or we could dig our country up for the masses of coal reserves that lay underneath and turn it into something looking like a "Mad Max" film, then you could all come to see Wales - not for its beautiful scenery but to see what a nuclear disaster area looks like. On a more serious side apparently there are (that word again) "Trillions" of "Tons Or Tonnes/whatever" of coal reserves under the coast line, maybe that is doable and something to build on. Having seen the state of the country when coal was about, (it was visually f%C*!*g awful) along with a dreadful/dangerous way of earning a living, so that is not going to happen any time soon with todays namby pamby workforce. It will take someone with more brain power and ambition than me to sort that one out, but with Scotland I see a very big opportunity for them to do something for the U.K and themselves as a whole.I do not think that they will do it this time, but once people realise as to how close it was it will be enough to keep the fires burning. They need to realise that the national debt is the "Key" - not the Oil. Tbh with regards to Wales not a lot affects, me and when it does I fight my own non descript corner. My own real fear is as mentioned the "National debt", if it implodes then I am not quite sure what I would be able to do , maybe it is back to growing potatoes and baking your own bread The government system has bred financial suppression, and many are happy to accept a negative contribution to society because there is no way out of it - so I guess Wales will continue to be an English own goal in financial deficit income.
