Anger over plans to turn off CCTV cameras in Carlisle

A group of retailers have been angered over Carlisle City Council's proposed plans to scrap CCTV in shops from 2014.

Reay Howie, a regional official with the city's branch of 'Retailers Against Crime', says that small shops which cannot afford to pay security guards will suffer most.

Carlisle city centre bandstand set to be replaced

The bandstand in Carlisle’s Green Market is set to be replaced as part of £255,000 package of improvements by the city council.

A report to councillors says the bandstand “is nearing the end of its life-expectancy”.

The replacement, at a cost of £50,000, will be removable and have a base that could hold a Christmas tree.

The report says: “This would allow greater flexibility over the pedestrian area during the Christmas period.”

The council’s ruling executive is expected to approve the move tomorrow.

Other plans include 30 new colour-coded signposts to direct visitors.

The report says: “Orientation around the city centre is poor due to outdated and poor quality signage.

“The proliferation of signage creates a negative impression for visitors and residents alike.

“Initially, we looked at refurbishing the existing finger posts. However, this proved difficult as they are expensive to update and their design also offers limited space for text.”

The new signs will be complemented by 10 information points at car parks, the railway and bus stations, the entrance to the historic quarter, and in Rickergate.

And 10 ‘welcome to Carlisle’ signs will be erected on main roads into the city.

The council would like to see higher-specification stone signs at motorway exits but these cost £15,000 each and will be installed only if businesses sponsor them.

There are plans too, to remove railings and copings around the disused underground toilets in Court Square, and cover the steps.

It also proposes to rename five car parks to make their names more “relevant”.

Devonshire Walk will become Castle car park, Town Dyke Orchard will be known as West Walls, Upper Viaduct as Viaduct, Lower Viaduct as Caldew Riverside, and West Walls as Marks & Spencer.

n Renovations to Carlisle’s historic Old Town Hall have cost more than expected.

Works to strip out and demolish part of the ground floor to accommodate a new access, lift shaft and staircase have identified “unforeseen structural problems”.

The executive is being asked to release £73,200 to cover repairs and another £52,000 for further improvements to the Assembly Room and tourist information centre, within the Grade I listed building.
