Labour inquest into Carlisle General Election defeat Labour strategists have launched an inquest into why they failed to win in Carlisle, one of the party’s top targets. Conservative John Stevenson won by 853 votes in 2010 to become the city’s first Tory MP since 1964. Labour had been confident of regaining the seat in Thursday’s poll but their hopes were dashed as Mr Stevenson’s majority increased to 2,774. Lee Sherriff, the Labour candidate, said: “We did everything we could. I have no regrets. We worked hard. People on the doorstep were saying we were the only politicians they had seen. We couldn’t have done any more.” She added: “I’d like to thank everybody who voted for me and campaigned for me. It has been a great two-and-a-half years [since her selection] and an incredible journey for me.” There was some consolation in that her sister Paula was elected as the MP for Dewsbury, one of the few Conservative-held marginals to fall to Labour. She said: “I’m really proud of Paula. We were both so busy we didn’t get a chance to speak on the night but I sent her a good luck message and tweeted her on Friday morning.” Miss Sherriff, who is also a city councillor for Harraby, plans to continue in politics. But the former shopworker has yet to decide if she will put her name forward again as a Parliamentary candidate. Her selection in September 2012 from an all-women shortlist was controversial and came just four months after she was elected as a city councillor. Some members of Carlisle Labour Party petitioned the national executive to ask for the women-only stipulation to be dropped. Privately, senior Tories were relieved Labour did not choose Kevin Parker, then vice-chairman of Carlisle Labour Party, who they considered more of a threat. John Mallinson, Mr Stevenson’s election agent, said: “Lee Sherriff ran a clean campaign and that’s a credit to her, but we did perceive her as a weak candidate.” Miss Sheriff’s agent, Michael Boaden, believes national factors were entirely to blame for her defeat. He said: “We fought an excellent campaign locally and Lee has been leading it from the front. “She was the right candidate who enhanced the local party and drew more people into working for the campaign than we’ve ever had before. I'll give you Idiocy Nidge  UKIP where the brainchild of the Tories  Put there to dilute the Labour vote Mission accomplished The Idiocy, the suckers like you who swallowed the fear that immigrants are to blame for all our Social ills, fact and double fact Another fact, the establishment couldn't infiltrate Scotland, 56 seats, 50% of votes cast, 56 MPs all going down to Westminster on an anti austerity, anti trident and a save our NHS mission, just sit back and watch all hell break lose, just not in Scotland, why, we didn't swallow the fear

The SNP suggested the oil would be the saviour - but apart from blaming it on the English - how did those predictions go? The back stop policy is to blame the English for everything - and it works - continue to go with it. |

All UKIP actually suggested in reality is that we have some degree f control on who enters the country - be it by visas or work permits or whatever else - yet they are jumped on as racist for stating the f*cking obvious.....go figure I seriously want the UK to remain in Europe - but what we signed up for in the mid 1970's isn't the same as what we have now - what we have now - irrespective of whatever - is absolute mong. Of courser, what I think is regarded as racist - in my view its common sense - so jail me. |
