Labour councillor quits after arrest on suspicion of drug dealing A Labour councillor has quit after being arrested on suspicion of possessing and intending to supply the former legal high, Mcat. Tom Neilson has resigned as a member of North West Leicestershire District Council after he was arrested, along with another man following a police raid in Measham on November 27. Mr Neilson had represented the Measham South ward on the council since 2011 and was the leader of the authority's Labour opposition group until he stepped down from the role in October citing work commitments as a call centre manager. He resigned his council seat at the end of last week. The East Midlands Labour Party spokeswoman said Mr Neilson had also been suspended from the Labour Party pending an internal investigation. The Mercury has attempted to contact Mr Neilson but he has not responded. Conservative North West Leicestershire District Council leader councillor Richard Blunt said: "I don't really know what happened other than the rumours circulating. "I can say I always found him a decent human being and I am very sorry he has resigned. "In his time as leader of the Labour group he was very honourable. I rated him very highly and, whatever else has happened, he is a loss to local government." The police have said two men, aged 26 and 32 and from the Measham area, were arrested after they executed the warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act at an address in village. The force today confirmed the men have been released on police bail, until March, while officers conduct further inquiries. Inspector Helena Bhakta, commander of North West Leicestershire Police, previously said: "This warrant was executed as a result of local people raising their concerns to us about drug dealing. "We have a zero tolerance approach to drugs and will continue to carry out operations of this nature and will not tolerate drug dealing or drug misuse of any sort. "Drug misuse can cause communities a huge amount of harm. "I would encourage anyone with any concerns about this type of activity in their area to get in touch with us, so we can take action. "Our aim is to always disrupt the distribution of drugs, which we hope will have a knock-on effect on the community." The council has publicised a notice for a by-election to find a new Measham South councillor. The regional Labour Party said it would be standing a candidate. Drugs make good people do crazy things, whilst on them and whilst desperate to get on them. This fella is a pillock, but drugs make people pillocks, and of course makes them dead. |

A bit like this one. Nottingham barrister charged with conspiracy to supply cocaine Nottingham barrister will spend Christmas behind bars after being charged with conspiracy to supply cocaine. Omar Khan appeared before Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Saturday and was remanded in custody until next year. The 31-year-old was working at The Johnson Partnership, but the company says he was due to launch his own chambers in Huddersfield in the coming weeks. Digby Johnson, a partner at the Long Row firm, said: "I am absolutely devastated. "We are not going to be representing him. "He was someone who worked hard and gave good quality advice and represented people the best he could." Mr Johnson said Khan had only five days of his contract left with the Nottingham firm and that the end of it was brought forward after he was arrested and charged. In court Khan gave his address as Williams Street, Huddersfield – near to where he has set up his own firm, Quantum Chambers Law Limited. He was charged on Friday with one count of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs between October 1 and December 4. Mr Johnson said Khan had been working in the city for the last five years. According to the Law Society he was admitted as a solicitor in 2012. The Bar Standards Board (BSB) has been told about his ongoing case. A spokesman said: "The BSB does not usually comment on individual cases in order to balance being open and transparent, along with its duty to safeguard information and confidentiality." Nottinghamshire Police made the arrest but said they were not willing to comment until after the case had concluded.
