Exclusive: New Shetland Gas Plant Shutdown Days after Going Online

Oil and Gas People has learned that Totals new £1billion Gas Plant in Shetland has spent the last 3 days fully shutdown less than two week after it came online.

Total gave the BCC exclusive coverage of the start up on the 8th of February. Arnaud Breuillac, President of exploration and production at Total said at the time: "The innovative subsea-to-shore development concept, the first of its kind in the UK, has no offshore surface infrastructure and benefits from both improved safety performance and lower costs."

Will Total make a return on its investment at current gas prices? "We can, but it requires extremely good performance in production, and to be extremely strict on cost," says the company's UK managing director, Elisabeth Proust.

Total would not confirm to Oil and Gas People the reason for the shutdown which is now into it's third day but sources working at the terminal told us that there had been a serious issue with compressor alignment.

A spokesman for Total issued the following statement: “Short periods of being offline are normal during the early stages of a new facility’s operational life as we make sure potential teething issues are identified and dealt with.”

The project is part of a massive £3.5bn investment by French company Total. The project has suffered massive delays running more than a year late and hugely over budget. Main contractor Petrofac took huge losses as a result.

In other words short cuts were taken and the plant isn't fit for purpose most likely Oh and the price of natural gas and LPG is probably too low for it to be worth running the plant

It is called commissioning. You don't just turn these things on and everything works as planned. For instance, We have the test track facility here for all the trains. They can spend months commissioning new trains to get them ready for the track but they still have to continue the process when the trains enter service. They don't just send them out and expect things to be perfect.

I had already read elsewhere that the plant had already been through a period of testing and commissioning and yes i know all about your test track even been to watch once but nowt going on. As much as it might surprise you i did actually study engineering at poly in the early 80's so i do know a bit about the subject
