George Osborne wants to take money away from people living with disabilities. [1]

The support he’s slashing, known as the Personal Independence Payment, is used by disabled people to help them live an independent life - for aids to help with things like washing and dressing. [2] In other words, money needed to live with dignity.

Conservative MPs are panicking. Some are already saying publicly that they don’t support taking this money away. [3] George Osborne is looking isolated, and one thing 38 Degrees members can do right now is show the public are against his cruel plans too.

We need to move fast. If thousands of us get behind a huge petition today, we can force George Osborne to do the right thing and keep this crucial support for disabled people.

The UK is better than this - better than taking money away from people who need it most. Taking away help to do the most basic things and live an independent life.

38 Degrees members believe in fairness, and when our government is hurting people who most need support we won’t stand by. Last Autumn, George Osborne tried to cut tax credits. This would have made many struggling families worse off. But 38 Degrees members mounted a massive campaign to stop him. And, together, we helped stopped that cut. [4]

People power can stop this cruel cut too. The more of us who rally in defence of people with disabilities, the more toxic we can make this for George Osborne, and the faster we can force him to back down.

So let’s get this petition going straight away. If you agree that George Osborne’s cuts are just plain cruel, add your name to the petition demanding he scraps them now:

Dear T

A lot has happened in 24 hours. Yesterday, 38 Degrees members leapt into action to help stop cuts to support for disabled people, called Personal Independence Payment. Iain Duncan Smith, the minister in charge of welfare, has now resigned and the government has said they may delay the decision on cuts. [1]

Talk of a delay isn’t the same as this cruel cut being cancelled. We've still got more to do to stop it altogether. So here's the plan:

David Cameron has already announced the name of the new welfare minister - Stephen Crabb MP. [2] We now need to work together to show Stephen Crabb that he has to stop cuts to Personal Independence Payment for good.

Stephen Crabb's getting ready for his first week in his new job. We can make sure that the first thing he has to deal with is continued public pressure to protect payments to disabled people.

One of the things any new minister does is sit down with their team of advisors to look through the newspapers. If enough of us chip in, we can buy full page adverts. Imagine Stephen Crabb leafing through the Telegraph or the Sun to find huge adverts paid for by 38 Degrees members, all telling him to stop the cuts to disabled people. That would definitely put our campaign near the top of his list of things to worry about!

But to get adverts in papers at the beginning of this week, we need to buy them ASAP. We don't have a moment to lose! Please can you chip in now to make it happen?

Chip in now
Here's an example of the advert we could get in the papers:

Newspaper advert

Chip in now
Newspaper adverts are a great way to pile pressure on Stephen Crabb to do the right thing. Politicians are obsessed with newspaper coverage. Buying full page adverts gets our message right where they fear it most.

So please help get this message splashed across newspapers next week: "Dear Stephen Crabb, Please protect Personal Independence Payments, from thousands and thousands of 38 Degrees members". Can you chip in a few pounds to make it happen?

Chip in now
When the plans to slash Personal Independence Payments were announced a few days ago, it looked like stopping them might be an uphill struggle. But now the tide is turning, and we've been part of that. So let's keep on the pressure until this threat to people living with disabilities has gone altogether, for good.

Thanks for being involved,

Bex, Amy, Rowan, David, Laura and the 38 Degrees team

PS: Newspaper adverts aren't cheap. But if they help stop hundreds of millions of pounds being taken from disabled people, they could be one of the best investments we ever make. So please chip in now:

NOTES
[1] David Cameron has stated that "Today we agreed not to proceed with the policies in their current form and instead to work together to get these policies right over the coming months." That leaves quite a lot of wriggle room for a similar cut to be implemented in the future:

PS: This isn’t just a small cut to people's budgets - it means people with disabilities and their families losing £70 a week. It means losing the lifeline. Conservative MP Andrew Percy says these cuts hit “exactly the wrong people.” [5] He’s right! Add your name to the petition now:

Dear T

Last week, George Osborne announced cuts to support for disabled people. This week, thanks to people power, they’ve been scrapped. [1] His plans to cut this support while handing tax cuts to big business and the super-rich were simply unfair. And together, 38 Degrees members were part of the campaign that put a stop to them.

51,000 of us wrote to our MPs, asking them to stop this cruel cut. And the petition that 180,000 of us signed was used in the media as proof that public opposition was growing. [2]

Screenshot of The Guardian’s live blog about cuts to PiP:
Guardian's live blog about our petition

As the new welfare minister, Stephen Crabb, settled into his new job, we gave him a 38 Degrees welcome. Together, we asked him to stop the cuts to Personal Independence Payment with a huge advert outside his office and splashed across the pages of the Telegraph: [3]

Our people-powered advert in the Daily Telegraph

Lots of other things also contributed to George Osborne being forced to backtrack. Politicians spoke out, charities warned of the consequences, and the media piled on the pressure. [4] But as the government desperately tried to change the subject, thousands of us, all working together, kept the debate focused on protecting disabled people. We can be proud of the part we played.

But there’s still more to do to make our society as fair as we want it to be. The super-rich are still not paying their fair share of tax. Too many people are still struggling to make ends meet. Without more people-powered campaigning, there’s a risk of more painful cuts in the future.

If the last few days have taught us anything, it’s that cuts like this are a choice, not a necessity. George Osborne chose to cut support for disabled people - and together we helped to force him to backtrack.

So together, 38 Degrees members need to be ready for the next time George Osborne announces huge cuts. But if we’re going to be armed for the next campaign, we need the technology to bring millions of people together to sign petitions and email their MPs. We need the ability to spring into action to fund a full-page advert in newspapers. We need the placards, leaflets and banners to spread the word to thousands more people.

All of that costs money - but the beauty of 38 Degrees is that if each of us chips in just a little, we don’t need anything except each other to do something amazing. [5]

So can you help 38 Degrees get ready for the next campaign to make Britain fairer? Please could you chip in a few pounds a month?
