'£2m pension' for grooming scandal cop: Chief constable whose force was attacked over handling of child abuse in Rotherham to retire from the role David Crompton, 52, is quitting role when his contract ends in November The £195,000-a-year top cop was in charge when report slammed his force Inspectorate found ‘serious concerns’ over approach to protecting children
The chief constable at the centre of the Rotherham child abuse scandal is retiring with an estimated pension pot of up to £2 million.
David Crompton, 52, whose South Yorkshire force also faced sharp criticism over its handling of an investigation into Sir Cliff Richard, is quitting his £195,000-a-year job when his contract ends in November.
Mr Crompton was in charge when a report by Professor Alexis Jay revealed that 1,400 children had been sexually abused by mainly Asian men in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013.
Police officers were slammed for failing the victims and turning a blind eye to crime.
Although most of the abuse occurred before Mr Crompton became chief in April 2012, South Yorkshire Police was also criticised for its response to the scandal.
HM Inspectorate of Constabulary found ‘serious concerns’ over the force’s approach to protecting children during an inspection in 2014, shortly after the publication of the Jay Report, and last year found major improvements were still needed.
South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Alan Billings, who extended Mr Crompton’s initial three-year contract by 18 months last spring, said he had accepted the chief constable’s wish to retire.
He said: ‘He’s done 31 years and feels the time has come to retire.
‘He was very clear when I saw him. He feels he has done his bit – he’s a relatively young man and there are other things to do in life.
'All credit to the chief constable that he has remained strong throughout that time when a lot of people would have simply given up and walked away.’

Mr Billings added: ‘It’s a very pressurised job, probably one of the most pressurised of jobs in the country, so I don’t blame him for going.’
Police pensions are among the most generous in the public sector. A chief constable will receive about £7.50 of taxpayer funds for every £1 he or she puts into the scheme and can expect to retire with a £500,000 lump sum and £75,000 pension.
This is equivalent to a pension pot of more than £2 million. Mr Crompton’s pension details have not been made public, and he refused to comment.
Only yesterday an independent report by Professor John Drew into South Yorkshire Police’s handling of child sexual exploitation revealed widespread failings among the senior ranks.
Mr Crompton also faced criticism over the way the BBC was tipped off about a raid on Sir Cliff’s home in August 2014.
