that we are the thickest country in the world everyone else successfully has import protection tarriffs except us

We do have import tariffs. The problem, if that is what you want to call it, is that they are set by the EU. I used to import cars and parts from the USA. There was an import duty of 10% added to every item and then VAT on the total price including the duty.
