The Labour Party have committed to planting 2,000,000,000 trees by 2040.

That works out to 33 per acre additional trees on all the land in the UK.

A football pitch sized area is one and a half acres.

So they will need to plant about fifty trees on the pitch at Brighton and Hove Albion, for instance. That’ll look a bit weird! OK at Nottingham Forest, I suppose! But you get the picture. So when our politicians say they’ll spend 50 billion here, 50 billion there, 500 billion everywhere, they haven’t got a clucking clue!

And my numbers are based on a billion being a thousand million, and not a million million!

This is a tiny island. I like trees, but two billion? Where, FFS!

from the woodland trust site

Quote:
The CCC analysis outlines that 32,000 hectares annually of net woodland increase is required for the next 30 years, moving the UK from 13% to 17% woodland cover. This equates to a million new hectares of woodland cover, and some 1.5 billion trees.

the uk has a total area of 24249500 hectares so not sure where your figures are from but there is room if we use marginal farmland and perhaps some of the remote Scottish Highlands which are only populated by sheep according to Stuart

Oops! Not 24249500. But 2424950.0 those decimal points eh!

But let’s talk acres. British. 60,000,000 acres. 2 billion trees. You do the math.

I do hate mathematically illiterate people  60 million acres divided by 2.471 is 24 million 249 thousand and 500 hectares

For many tree species you plant at a density of between 800 and 1000 an acre (and then thin out as they start to grow so if you planted trees on every acre of uk soil that would be up to 60 Billion saplings which would eventually be thinned out to around 20 billion trees so 2 billion is 1 10th the uk land mass and add to that the approximate 7 per cent that's already woodland you get 17 percent

maths class dismisses Jimbo you get an F

Do you believe there will be 2 Billion trees planted in the next twenty years?

In 2040 will there be 2 billion more trees?

What is a billion anyway, in your humble opinion?

Is it, a hundred million, a thousand million, or a million million?

Politicians of every persuasion are making absurd claims as to the amount they will spend on health, defence, education etc, because they will never be fulfilled.

The Labour Party recently said they would find £58 billion to right the wrong of the WASPI women who have been cheated out of their state pension. Their on line calculator showed that my wife would receive £18,000 in back payment. Quite a bribe for one vote. Does she believe it will ever happen? Of course not! Even though Corbyn is personally going to plant billions of trees on land needed to plant vegetables for when we are all vegan.
Mind you 2 Billion is an awful lot of magic money trees. Better get started soon though, need to plant a million a day, unless my maths are wrong!

If we plant all these trees will we have enough land left to grow the food we need? I suppose we could just plant fruit trees and nut trees so at least we can eat the produce, especially when we have all turned vegan. Or maybe we wont need so much land to grow our food when we leave the EU because the yanks will be sending their GM modified vegetables and Hormone filled beef over here.

there are large areas of land in the uk unsuited to growing arable crops but perfectly suited to growing trees mostly occupied by sheep or game estates where the land is used for rearing birds for shooting. We generally export wheat (mostly for animal feed) because the stuff needed for sliced white bread doesn't grow very well in the UK anyway so we import that from France so I would say yes we can if we eat less lamb and wear less wool

Cover the Highlands in trees! Trees won't grow above a certain level, the trees will displace sheep and we need sheep for food and wool, the lower moor land tree level if saturated in trees would destroy the heather moorlands and bogs that acts as giant areas of sponges which reduces flash flooding.

Same applies to most of England and Wales, they would cover food growing areas with trees, it'd be nice and green but the people would starve.

Has any of these Muppets from Lefty Labour city politicians thought any of this through.

For every positive action there is an opposite and negative reaction....bunch of bloody idiots.

Britain including much of the Highlands was once covered in trees which also soak up water preventing flooding I'm sure we could send all the sheep to the Falklands to live

It may lead to some hideous cross hybridisation that leads to the creation of Sheep Huggers and Tree Sh*ggers.....
