so having just been found guilty of hiding and destroying crucial communication between big pharma and herself and her team during vaccine negotiations she has been voted in for another 5 years as EU preisdent

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cw5yg6dp0gxo

Ursula von der Leyen has been re-elected as president of the European Commission following a secret ballot among MEPs.

She secured the backing of 401 Members of the European Parliament at a vote in Strasbourg on Thursday - 41 more than she needed.

Ms von der Leyen, of the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP), was first elected in 2019.

She will now serve another five years at the helm of the EU.

there's loads more but above is all we need to know

I suppose they had to she knows where all the bodies are buried !

Typical EU.

One has to wonder why they don't let the good people of the EU elect their leader.

The EU is a sham.

We don't vote for our leader.

Your only vote is for a Member of Parliament.

The Monarch asks a Member of Parliament (from either House) to form a Government. The Monarch knows who to ask by the make up of the (primarily) House of Commons.

Apart from the (slim) possibility of the party leader not actually getting elected.

When a Party Leader resigns who is the PM, the outgoing Leader resigns Government to the Monarch. There is no General Election, the Party elect a new Leader, the Monarch asks the incoming to form a Government.

Did anyone apart from Tory Party elect Boris J the first time? Did anyone vote for Truss? Did anyone vote for Sunak? (Obviously excluding their own constituents and Party.) It happens with the other side too, Callaghan for example.

Americans vote for a President. They vote for their legislative Houses. We ONLY vote for a Member of the Commons.

If we voted for a Prime Minister as well as the Commons, we could end up with a Prime Minister we democratically want but with a Parliament that would immediately have a vote of "No Confidence" and we are back to a Prime Ministerial Election.

If we had a French style "President", he could call a Parliamentary Election whenever he wanted (as has recently happened in France).

We have got what we have got. You ONLY vote for your MP. In effect your MP joins a "College" who elect a Prime Minister, in the same way that the College of Cardinals elect a Pope.

At a general election we are voting for who we want to be PM yes that can change if the PM resigns or kicks the bucket without a fresh general election but thats the same as the vice president getting promoted in the US but that circumstance is not the USUAL one.

Since 1940, three British prime ministers have gone to the palace for the monarch to ask them on two occasions to form a government . Winston Churchill and Harold Wilson were two. Who was the third?

No there isn’t. If you are thinking Blair/ Thatcher, there is no need for prime ministers to be asked if they are re elected.

Their local electorate must vote in the PM, and the leader of the EU is voted in by MEPs not a proper electorate.

No they do not. If a sitting prime minister wins an election, they continue in office, and are not required to be asked by the monarch to form a new government, although they will seek an audience.

Churchill and Wilson were both asked to form a government on two separate occasions. The third was Liz Truss was asked to form a government as a new prime minister by Queen Elizabeth and King Charles.

i am not sure that it works quite like that.
If the prime minister resigns they either stay on until a succesor is found or the party appoins an interim prime minister, usually but not always the deputy prime minister.
