So Streeting now resigned to work on getting his 81 signatures and Rayner has conveniently sorted out her tax affairs without any fines or penalties allegedly

We are going to have a by election in Makerfield in which Burnham will be allowed to stand

Millibellend has also put himself in the race along with some lesser known candidates

Will Streeting get his challenge in quick enough to head the lefties off at the pass or or are we going to see the government shifting sharply to the left or will the stubborn mule spite them all and call a general election ?

I would love it to be the latter but I suspect it will be the lefties seizing control by the end of the year

"He who wields the knife never wears the crown." [Michael Heseltine]

I get the impression Streeting tried an early bluff and Starmer called it. And I'm not sure Labour should be confident about Burnham winning in Makerfield.

A GE now (before anyone has actually shown their hand) is technically possible -

High risk and showboaty - not Starmer style IMO. He's survived this far so why interrupt his enemies when they're making mistakes?

Burnham has to resign to stand as a candidate in a by election, Starmer could shaft him by timing it so the new PM is elected before the by election

Actually you are wrong he does not have to resign unless he gets elected. he doesn't have to resign as mayor until after he wins the byelection

Burn ham allowed to apply to be candidate.

Likely date June 18th

Chances of winning? Zero.

Burnham would be a great PM for those opposed to cross border hiring.

But on every other matter he would be as disastrous as Starmer and all the others conspiring against him.

Rats in a sack / crabs in a bucket.

Starmer may as well hunker down and let them do their thing - as he seems to be doing already.

correct

he now, oddly, DOES NOT want the UK to rejoin the EU

He did want HS2 to extend to Manchester

Burnham will need his A-game - the media pounces on any wobble or u-turn and a lot can go wrong before Makerfield.

Even more interesting if Rayner (or even AN Other) enters the chat.

Odds today

Labour 8/15

Reform 9/4

Restore 6/1

Greens 150/1

Conservatives 300/1

LibDems 400/1

Personally I think Labour+Reform are level pegging, Restore will split Reforms vote, the greens ar much closer than 150/1...

The thing is that if someone went and put £500 on the Greens, they would suddenly become favourites.

Labour: 43%
Reform: 40%
Restore Britain: 7%
Lib Dems: 4%
Greens: 3%
Cons: 2%
Other: 1%

Sample size is small (369) so it could be close on the day.

Now if restore britain were'nt intent on challenging reform there might be a chance of stopping Burnham winning although i think that poll is maybe a little suspicious as the tories took over 10% at the last general election

Post subject:  Re: the ousting of the stubborn mule

the latest makerfield poll shows Burnham with 49% of the vote which will be a resounding victory with a bigger margin than the general election
