competition of someone obtaining the same license as you

i like the way you have managed to change the competition word, but tell me how is he going to compete with me?

if you know anything about taxi driving, then you will know that a lot of your work is done on the ranks, so basically if he is before me then he gets the job, if i am before him then I get the job, again if you are a taxi driver then you would know that most taxis have meters, so it would be the same fare, unless of course he wanted to do cut his fares, then thats upto him, as pretty soon he would be out of business.

alternatively he might be flagged down, again his fare will not be any different then mine, if he wants to give a free fare then its up to him, all that will happen is customers will start expecting these silly prices and most of the other good drivers wont be doing them.

no the only competition that will exisit will be the competition for scarce resources i.e. rank space, road space but your faceless species doesnt seem to understand that.

really? faceless? sorry TDO as much as you loathe what I say, its the truth, whilst you guys are jacking off on deregulation, spare a thought for the people it has affected, I forget you dont care about them, yet you blabber on about how you are the trade, how you care for the trade etc etc.

For a start I've always advocated a delayed approach to derestricition, as you should well know, but of course it suits you to ignore this. Indeed it's people like yourself that are causing the problems, since when D-day does arrive people will still be buying plates right up to (and possibly after) it happens, to thier detriment, because of what people like you spout, but if that's in your interest then presumably others don't matter.

But then again, as your post above makes clear, you deem 'the trade' to be the vested interest group that you're part of, not the wider and more representative trade.

Quote:
I have to keep my arguments simplistic for you, misleading I think not, misrepresentative, dont think so,

Well all the points you made in your post were incorrect, and are totally contrary to what I've said over the past few years on this forum and others.

Quote:
If you know anything about deregulation and market forces, then explain to me about the buses? the state of the railway or better still the energy companies????

If you could explain the parallels between what happened there and what TDO is advocating for taxi markets then I'm all ears

Quote:
as me for being faceless, well we all know where i am, what I drive, but do we know where you are? no because you are FACELESS, prefering to cower behind the scenes.........

So why not use your real name then?

But personally I couldn't care less, since I worry about the arguments, not the personalities.

And I for one don't want people like yourself misrepresenting me, so I'll keep my ID to myself, thank you

nope the faceless ones believe in the OFT mantra of more cars means more choice i.e. more competition, thing is the fares are regulated by the councils.

Quote:
What does he suggest? negotiate prices

Who mentioned negotiated prices, and what does the fact that fares are regulated by the council have to do with whatever point it is you're trying to make #-o

Quote:
also the faceless ones wished the OFT hadn't got involved, thing is they probably are the OFT

:^o

Quote:
As for Quality controls, they want anyone to be able to drive any type of vehicle so any one can join in.

Who said that and when?

Quote:
Obviously it wont matter to the faceless one as he would be hiding somewhere not showing his face

Like yourself and 99% of the trade, I suspect.

Tell me your reasons why you believe you should be a protected species and immune from the competition of someone obtaining the same license as you?

Where in that post did I mention competing for work? If you answer the first question on why you believe you should be a protected species you can then move on to the second question why you think you should be immune from someone obtaining the same license as you?

The question was about obtaining a license and not about competing for work. You being a cab driver should have known that you don't have to drive a cab in ordere to hold to a proprietors license? Ask Mr Carl Cummings who has 52 of them.

Maybe now you'll answer the question I put to you?

i dont know about Mr Carl Cummings, but I dont think you understand the word competition.

now as for question 1

if you want a license then all you have to is either (a) buy the licence from someone or (b) wait till the survey is done and if you are lucky then you might get one, or (c) go drive private hire

i hope that answers question 1.

now returning to competition, dont you understand that more cars = more competition for existing work? which also equals less space on ranks, more cars on the road, but none of this is your concern is it? you couldnot give a chit if cars were triple parked or booted out of the bus lanes or if you had to wait thirty minutes for a job.

Do you know anything about how competition in the taxi market actually works? in fact do you even know anything about the business which you are trying so desperatley to chit up?

Why dont you go and work in dereg land and tell us how wonderful it is?

I wonder what your problem with existing license holders is?

p.s. thier is a world of difference between obtaining a license and competing for a license

After everything written on this forum it is hard to believe you are still coming out with this sh**.

A restrictive practice operates by artificially creating and unmet demand for taxi services. Service to the customer is restricted thus creating an unmet demand. Effectively turning the customer into a controlled commodity to be sold on to the taxi operator through tariff, permit or licence plate premiums. In short the customer is exploited through the lack of competition in providing a service. The over supply of taxi drivers coupled with the limited shifts available makes the drivers market overly competitive for the driver and non competitive for the owner. Both the customer and taxi driver are denied the opportunity to compete in an unrestricted and free market.

Once again 187ums you push the boat out and make yourself look like a complete arse.

Why don’t you take a day off?

Answer me this question 187ums. Do you repeat what you write on this forum in person to customers, drivers and owners?

Here's another question just while I think about it. Are you the exception or the rule where you work?

I get a funny feeling you are going to tell me you are the rule.

No it doesn't answer question one!

I asked you why you think you should be a protected species? Is that too hard a question to answer? You gave me some guff about buying a plate in Oxford, I don't want to know how to obtain a plate in Oxford, I can figure that out for myself. I have 80,000 reasons why not to buy a plate in Oxford.

All I would like to know, is why you think that you personally, should be treated as a protected species? Maybe you don't know the answer to that question or perhaps you do know the answer but you are reluctant to share it with us?

let me try a different approach - i am not a protected species, in fact I have competition ( you dont understand that word ) on a daily basis from the bus, private hire, trains and other modes of transport.

I guess if i was protected then none of the alternatives would exist, as for your eighty thousand reasons, i think you are off the mark as usual.

There is compeition as regards substitutes, but as regards the taxi market per se there is none, as you well know, because it's more cartel than competition.

You're trying to say that night is day.

its funny JD doesn't understand the word competition and you the word cartel. Please explain to me how more taxis would lead to the marketplace being more competitive and how we operate as a cartel?

Cartel = agreement to distort market = Oxford council and you.

If the market is distorted then it's not a perfectly competitive market, surely?

What then do you call a council policy that tries to exclude equally qualified persons from obtaining the same proprietor's license as you?

Do you not see a difference between Oxford and Birmingham?

Licenses in Birmingham are not protected by means of limitation, Oxford licenses most definitely are?

When looking at the evidence, most people of sound mind might conclude that Oxford fit into the category of protected species, it is most interesting to read that you take the opposite view.

I dont think the comparison is correct, oxford is small, birmingham is massive, and even after dereg they have had and still have enormous problems with illegal ph and out of town cabs.

no one is stopping these equally qualified people from obtaining a license.

and anyway even if we do get deregged, i cant wait to see where all these extra cars will go? the train station is already at bursting point, the coach station, well forget it, they will be coming out on to high street. that doesnt leave anywhere else for them to be ranked up.

also they will have to cut back on the bus stops - cant see that happening, why dont you pay a visit to the city of dreaming spires and see it how it is, rather than listening to the ramblings of "equally qualified people".
