OFT - TAXI DEREGULATION 01.03.04

Meale/Alan

That this House is alarmed about the Office of Fair Trading's recent report on the taxi trade, which advocates the deregulation of the industry; is deeply concerned that since its publication, the OFT has engaged in a series of behind closed doors, so-called round table discussions across the country, promoting its own position against other options and without the involvement of representatives of those who work in that sector; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to listen to common sense and reject the dangerous and misguided meanderings of this body, before its actions and opinions ruin what is by and large a sensibly managed and regulated public transport service.

The average number of signatries for 'Early day motions' is between 40 and 100, and the doom-mongers have got 6.

Even the 'HORNCHURCH FOOTBALL CLUB' got 27.

You missed a bit suspect, infact you missed quite alot.

I must have typed a few million words, on forums, in the press, to MPs, to councils etc etc.

Not once have I had a coherent answer to the 'why restrict' question.

SM please, you dismiss every argument proposed, you dismiss as "scare mongering" anyone who offers you what they believe to be a honest answer. You constantly berate anyone who's views differ from your own.

I have asked this question of you before, you have never ansered it.

Lets say I call your office to pick me up from home and take me into the town centre at 7 pm, you get the job 10 mins before its due and your heading for my address. Whilst on the way someone flags you down and askes to go twice as far as I want to go

What would you do?

Lets say my wife phones your office with a booking for 11:30pm from outside our local pub to take her the 1 mile home, again you get the job, you arrive at 11:25pm and someone offers you a job that will cover 20 miles

What would you do?

Goodness me, it's now up to 32.

Another 5 and you will have as many as the 'HAND ARM VIBRATION SYNDROME' edm.

Still you never know about edms. The edm about tuition fees got nearly 300.

By the way, when do tuition fees come into existence?

I suspect I have never answered it, cos it's a daft question.

But to answer it, I wouldn't stop in the first place.

I would say to them, hang on, I will be back in ten minutes.

Its not a daft question SM, and by discounting it you prove why we should have a P/H market.

So you wouldn't stop for flaggers, canny answer that mind, especially when you berate the H/C lads of doing exactly that now.

You don't want a level playing field you want your own playing field where you choose the rules, in is a fact that both people involved in the question need a certain level of service and the only way to deliver that service is to have two types of licence to accomodate the needs of the public.

But what about my next door neighbour who has booked your office to pick her elderly mother up at 11:35pm and take her home?

Well there's a first time for everything, and this is the first time I have been berated by those representing the HC trade, for not picking up flaggers. :?

I only wish I could.

It's doesn't matter how many times you say it, it still doesn't make sense.

What I want is for a fit and proper person, who's supplying a fit and proper vehicle, to be given a HC vehicle license on demand.

Not just for me, but for any fit and proper person.

It's called treating people equally, nothing else.

This must be so interesting for everyone else. :?

If I knew about the other booking, then I would turn down the booking that wasn't booked.

Unless they where going in a similar direction, then I would ask them if they wanted to share.

If they didn't want to share, then I would book them another one.

Not exactly rocket science.

Must be why the T&G wants a one-tier system then.

Anyway, the fact that some taxi/HC drivers bend or break the rules isnt' really a good rationale for giving them a protected market, surely?
