Well Mabel we do have competition, lots of it, but is it a level playing field for the Hacks, of course not, pedicabs, no rules whatsoever, if the traffics congested just use the pavements or take them across the pedestrian crossings, buses? PH , strange idea of no competition.

I hardly think that £40k plates granted for an admin fee is indicative of a level playing field either.

They too have to pay £700 to the council for their licence and it has to be renewed every year like a black cab driver.

I can't believe the license and testing fees in Edinburgh. :-k

Well perhaps not, depending on your view, but the main point still remains, mabel said

"Why should the black taxi drivers have no competition?"

no one is saying we should not have competition, but it's got to be fair competition, even if you exclude the plate values from the equation it would still be the same.

Thanks for the Montrose Terrace input guys. Reason I asked is because not so long ago the address was registered to Peter Gillam and Kathrine EC Mackie. Both have since become Sheriffs.

Peter Gillam a solicitor was appointed Sheriff in December 1999 at age 56.

In November 1999 there was upheaval in the Scottish legal system because of the lack full time Sheriffs. Temporary Sheriffs were deemed illegal because they couldn't guarantee impartiality and all 130 temporary Sheriffs were dismissed. The following story outlines the background as to why Peter Gillam and nine others were hurriedly made Sheriffs.

The link below gives some background information to the Ten newly appointed Sheriffs.

The following link from 2002 highlights the political background in which some appointments are made and suggests some may be due to "who you know" and not "what you know".

After Lord Andrew Hardie was made Lord Advocate in 1997, he appointed two figures as Sheriffs from his old firm: Peter Gillam and Rajni Swanney. Swanney was seen as a controversial appointment, viewed by some in the legal profession as lacking experience.

Sheriff Katherine EC Mackie doesn't seem to have adjudicated that many cases so it may be that she is a newly appointed Sheriff? The only case I can find of hers is the recent case involving 3Maxblack. I will find out tomorrow just what legal pedigree she has. I am interested to know if she has a past association with Edinburgh Council?

Regards

JD

She qualified as a solicitor in 1978 and was appointed a Sheriff on 4th May 2000. Her husband David Mackie is also a Sheriff. He was appointed as a part-time Sheriff in June 2001 and made full-time on 4th December 2001.
What are you trying to prove here?
