Yeah, but the question is what is creating allegedly low supply and high demand. If it's gained from the operation of a cartel that's not market forces.

"Cartel!!!"

Are you having a Giraffe?

Down here it's 'dog eat dog' in the cab trade now.

We have loads of drivers who regularly picking up from the middle of a rank or within very close proximity of a rank; another version of market forces!!

And enforcement, after receiving a complaint in writing, reply in writing that there is no offence being committed.

So 'dog eat dog' here I come too.

Cartel my aunt's knitting needles!!!

Why don't you pay attention. The reference to supply and demand was specifically referring to the fuel market, raised in this thread.

Well you did fool me!

There's me thinkng that you were excreting your Marxist doctrine about all the bourgeois capitalists in your cab tarade about Taxi Barons (the lowest rank in the British peerage) & it was all about the Ewings from Southfork!!

Well, gubber me!!

jasbar wrote:
And drivers picking up from the middle, or near ranks, has nothing to do with the market, just a lack of trade etiquette and enforcement of existing rules.

It has everything to do with market forces, because if a passenger requests to be taken in your taxi, only a fool would refuse. Market forces is all about relentlessly grabbing as much money as you can & that means fares, & not refusing passengers when they ask to be conveyed.

Trade etiquette, unfortunately, went down the pan a long time ago, & as for enforcement of existing rules; there are no laws that stop a driver being hired from any position on a taxi rank or in close proximity to a rank. In fact the converse is the case, as a passenger does NOT have to take the first cab on a rank, if they don't wish to.

jasbar wrote:
Any breach of the rules should be advised to the authorities, requiring them to take action against the transgressors. Only when this happens can some semblance of professional decency operate within the trade.

In my experience it would be some foolish enforcement officer that acted on the 'say-so' of a driver complaining about another driver, without witnesses & corroboration. And as for the trade having any semblance of decency .....

jasbar wrote:
Merely whingeing and doing nothing about it doesn't improve matters.

I am doing something about it; as far as I'm concerned, it's 'dog eat dog' out on the ranks now, me too!!

You OK Brummie cabbie? You seem to have gone off on some apoplexy, to the point where your vascular system may be in some pseudo fatal distress.

Ewings from Southfork? May I suggest you switch your telly off and sit in the saddle, the better to earn brass that is.

I wonder how many customers are actually aware that they have the right to select any cab on the rank they wish? Which of course allows them to refuse to take a taxi driven by a black man or woman. Or any woman for that matter. Or because the cabbie is a city fan rather than a villa afficionado. Or because he has a wart on the end of his plonk.

In Edinburgh we pride ourselves on discouraging such nonsense. A customer wishes to negotiate the price downwards, we all agree to ask for the same fare as the first car on the rank. Except in the case of the desperado who bucks the system - then the Skull just slaps him.

Trade etiquette in your region may have disappeared, but it's got naught to do with the state of the market, it's down to personal greed. Which has probably led to you all undercutting each other to grab a share of the pie. We haven't descended to your level in Edinburgh. A job's worth doing, then it's the same worth for all of us.

Finally, corroboration? We don't need it in Edinburgh. We have a council that is determined to stiff any cabbie. They do what they like, when they like to whomsoever they like. They make it up as they go along. And they will take your livelihood away from you because they can. Councillors in City of Edinburgh Council are fascists.

I warrant they deserve to be take before a wall and given a 9mm injection. I can now understand the frustration that led to the unjust slaughter of the house of Romanov in Ekaterinburg. It's not justifiable, but perfectly understandable because of the way the system behaves.

My safety valve is in despising these saddoes. They pontificate about politics, but they are merely scum, masquerading as political do-gooders.

Who needs corroboration in a fascist dictatorship, eh?

Meanwhile it's dog eat dog on the ranks because of what YOU'VE allowed to happen. It's YOUR fault.

Enjoy!!!

You think & write like Josef, your hero, who from 3rd April 1922 until 5th March 1953 was General Secretary of The Communist Party of The CCCP. Stalin too, was a champion of the 9mm injection to the head.

Experience tells me that these instances are more prevalent in deregulated areas

Keep taking the tablets son. You need them to keep a lid on your vivid imagination.

BTW Stalinism is thriving on our council regulatory committee.

That's why they take you livelihood from you because you are not a "fit and proper" person, when they have never defined what a fit and proper person is. They just don't know. They don't want to know. They don't need to know.

They don't care.

That's why they have to be stopped. And the Euro Human rights legislation is the gateway to bringing them down.

So, you admit you're aware of the difference. Yet you still promulgate it?

You don't find it hard to be a pillock, do you CC?

Oh, I see!

So, they are the Polit Bureau, & you are just a mere Comrade or Tovarishch to be more precise.

So from today then, you will be known on TDO as Tovarishch Jasbar.

I think we had the word deregulate before delimit....delimit is a far better word to swallow than deregulate because it doesnt come with those images people have of deregulation.

In other words.....delimit is basically bullsh*tting people.

So it would give you some pleasure to come up with another, not very clever, name, as if that is supposed to irk me, or advance any argument?

Only a child would meander off on some tangent demonstrating a complete lack of understanding of the topic rather than recognising the disgrace of a council taking people's livelihoods away from them.

You appear to have a curious level of conscience.

Perhaps that's why our trade is generally shecht upon from a great height and we can't get our act together to rectify it?

What you seem to forget Tovarishch is that the Polit Bureau is there for the people & not the individual.

You & I don't count; it is the tovarishshe as a whole that the Polit Bureau have to answer to & not a few hundred taxi driver comrades.
