I hear there was a meeting about the equality bill in London On Thursday 5th August 2010, anybody got an update for us please.

Well it won't affect the London Taxi trade, we've been fully wheelchair friendly since 1999.

In skippy land you'll need some saloons

Letter from Transport Minster to B&H City Council re section 161 and 163 of the Equality Act 2010.

Equalities Act letter

I think the council were asking the Minister what's the point of section 161 (the % section) when section 163 will lead to 100% WAV taxis anyway. :?

Not sure he has grasped that. :-s

The DfT plans to consult on the content of regulations before section 161 comes in to force; the actual date will be announced in due course, but it will not be before April 2011.

At a meeting today, Sefton licensing had a rude awakening to reality... it was pointed out that because of the Equality Bill as it stands that most of the wheelchair jobs that we do now using common sense..... we will not be able to do in the future without breaking the law... and the private hire sector did not realise that they would be required to be able to lift a person from a wheelchair and place them into the car....

The lifting is a Health & Safety issue for both driver & passenger, so that will be very interesting to follow.

The time to debate/discuss/promote the above was in 1995.

Too late now.

Well actually I never give up.

That said I look forward to a 100% WAV hackney carriage fleet throughout the country.

The sooner the better.

if a new wav is £30K and a new saloon £15k how much has been wasted since 1995 to provide 1.5% of the population with an underused standby service?
