Why?

Because customers expect taxis to look like taxis, and private hire vehicles to look like private hire vehicle.

Ask most people to describe a taxi and they will point towards a London cab. Same question in relation to private hire and they will point out a saloon.

However the main reason is that people wanting wheelchair cabs wait far too long in areas that aren't 100% WAV. That in 2010 is not acceptable.

Another reason is the facial situation where some taxis owners need only to license a saloon, whilst others, licensed by the same council, need to license a WAV. Is that really how the trade should be run?

So IMO let's stop f***ing about, if you want to license a taxi make it a WAV, if you don't want to license a WAV go PH.

Rubbish.... the majority of people in the country think that a taxi is a saloon vehicle with a big taxis sign across the roof... and when they see a London hackney... they refer to it as a London hackney.... and if you really cared about the disabled... you would be arguing that the private hire should provide wheelchair accessible vehicles for their customers... but you don't.. do you

Going 100% WAV will not help the disabled MUCH. Manchester was the first City to become all WAV. The disabled in Manchester still wait hours, at home or in Hospital for a Taxi if the driver's become aware it is a regular WAV job. Thats the way driver's are. Forcing driver's to do something by restrictive licensing will never work as it should. Most Hackneys in Manchester have no radio's (there are no decent radio circuits in Manchester) how can the WAV disabled get a cab? The answer is obvious make all P.H. go WAV, simples.

In this neck of the woods.
New or replacement Taxis and Ph's anything carrying over 4 passengers has to be WAV and now if a plated hackney saloon is transfer or too old to renew it will have to be a WAV.

There’s nothing about PH saloon / estates yet

As for limo's carry up to 8 passengers lol   how the heck are they going to licence those now , i mean its a ph over 4 passengers, but anything over has to be a WAV lol   lol   lol   they did not think about that one

if they cant work that out on thier salaries.....

ok

options

A) have 2 colour plates - take it in turns for "rank days"

wow, that was hard

B) Issue "rank" plates on a % of WAVs

C) Plate numbers - Ranks "even" numbers 1 day, "odds" the next

Not rocket science is it

and only have cars ranked on available spaces, not waiting round the block

People on here quote European law.... all what you have suggested would be illegal....

and may I remind you what your original suggestion was... One plate one trade. Just being picky...

I couldn't agree with you more... too many people with big sticks and big war chests filled with money... forcing people to their will..... Sounds familiar...
