So true toots.....Its wrong that one group of opposing passenger transportation styles should try and get the other to be made to obey the same rules as they are subject to. I for one if needs be will go get a WAV or two and sell off my saloons and simply become a Hack....tis that easy to do here. now the real losers then will be those that already are Taxi drivers as there will be twice or thrice the competition in the ranks and on the street as there is at present.

Any wise hack should be praying to hell that PH dont need to be WAV..indeed campaining for them not to be, just to protect their own livelyhoods.

as they say...one should be careful for what you wish for....you might get it!

Thats an open market and competition for you.....unless you're saying those hacks in your area dont do PH work......which I find difficult to believe

We have 3 ways of working here, the punter comes to the rank, phones for 1, or hails it from the street, as a 1 man band the punters phone me direct, just like 80% of other hack owners here

So what do you do when someone phones for your services, you turn up to pick them up & low & behold, they are in a wheelchair & so disabled that they cannot get out of the wheelchair nor be lifted out of the wheelchair?

What do you do in those circumstances & has this ever occured??

What would you do Mr Skippy41???

Dunno abut Skip, but its never happened to me yet, and besides such a severly disabled wheelchair user would be well aware of their precise needs. if the person is in anything other than a medium sized standard type wheelchair then even a WAV would be struggling...so what would the WAV driver do when he cant load the customer either....same argument applys to both PH and Hack..

I've always found that the wheelchair bound, due to their circumstances, plan their journeys.

Our PH Vehicle license is cheaper than a saloon HC £130.00 and the age limit is longer.

PH Operator 1 - 5 cars £114.00

It's not about loading the passenger or not ..... it's about providing an equal opportunity.

About 90-95% of wheelchair jobs that I am dispatched to, come across or come to the rank, I refuse to take ..... legitimately.

I have a check list.

1. Is the wheelchair in a good state of repair ..... are the tyres pumped up, do the brakes work efficiently so that I can engage the wheelchair brakes once the wheelchair is correctly position inside the cab.

2. If stabilisers are fitted to the wheelchair are they detachable or swivel so that they don't imped the wheelchair up the ramp.

3. How wide apart are the wheels on the wheelchiars ..... I carry a measuring tape for this & my maximum ramp wheel width is 62cm. All wheelchair go into the cab via the ramp & no other way.

4. Is the wheelchair & occupant short enough to turn around into the correct position once inside the cab. Again I use my measuring tape for this.

If all these criteria are met, the wheelchair is loaded & secured in the correct position.

If any one of the criteria fails then the wheelchair occupant is advised politely why I am declining the hiring & I drive off.

I carry wheelchair passengers in the correct way only. I give them the opportunity to be taken as my passengers.

Idiot driver in a TX as it happens.

I would have declined the hiring after explaining why to the passengers.

What's the point if at a glance you already know that you are going to decline the hiring, but still have to go through the motions to explain why you are declining the hiring.

On the dead certs, yes I do.

I was under the impression the wheelchair was not loaded correctly and it had little to do with the wheelchair size.

on the subject of equality.....does not the customer have the right to a non WAV vehicle if they so wish, Equality is for all so why shouldnt a customer disabled or not have the right to use a well apportioned saloon to take them where they want to go rather as be forced to use what is basically a cobbling together of a windowed van and an ambulance (AKA a WAV), a gas guzzling CO2 belching brute of a vehicle. this so called equality Bill seems to ignore the equal rights of choice of 98/% non wheelchair bound of the nation to give additional rights to the unfortunate 2% of Wheelchair users.

Now im not being callous or uncaring here....but that is an inaqulity in itself.

A slightly higher percentage of vehicles as would meet demand would be perfectly adequate..why is it this stupid government always takes a sledge hammer to crack a nut, is it any wonder we are a nation in terrible debt with a failing private/business sector with business's big and small going to the wall when they come up with decisions like this that will invariably put many more on the dole queues...we simply cant afford such grandious schemes, nor will we be able to afford them for many years. one day in the future we'll be lucky to have any kind of Taxi or PH industry left as we will have jacked it in as being non viable, some of you non believers will be in that dole queue too..then where will the poor wheelchair user turn to then after we inadvertently strangled to death the very services they relied on? there'll be nowt but Volunteers left, probably its the same people that run the volunteer groups that are advising the equal rights types...all very cosy.

This just one example of needless government interference, it sadly occurs in all types of business by half baked ideals dreamt up by various quangos and government bodies...a bunch of non jobsworths hell bent on the destruction of all industry.

We live in the real world, not the toy money world of the quangocrats and Nulab/Liberal politicians..
