Cllr Gordon also promised to improve taxi ranks in the borough (bearing in mind) that new ranks alone will not bring more passengers) he went on to say a new criteria would be adopted at a future meeting prior to any new licenses being issued.

I do hope the chap reads through one of the Kelly cases carefully

Looks like the situation could be far from over as there are rumours that a bunch of disgruntled drivers are contemplating taking the council to court as they are open to legal challenge.

In other news, every man and his dog is applying for a plate

These are just rumours so take them with a pinch of salt but it looks like it ain't over just yet for the council or the trade.

What Tosh

How can anyone be "disgruntled" at this stage? The council haven't decided who will be eligible to apply.

How can they be "contemplating" going to court before they know if they will be eligible for a plate or not?

If the council were to lose in court again after the plates were issued, they would probably throw the hat in and de-regulate once and for all.

That would stop anyone being disgruntled with the council as "every man and his dog" could sit there in their new cab and earn sweet buck all.

PHV numbers have fell by over a third due to a lack of work in this tiny crusty town. Lets treble the Hack fleet and earn a mint.

Well now it looks like the SHTF for Stockport.

Well we thought Stockport was done and dusted. Managed growth, 5 cabs a year, what a result. To good to be true ? Yes. Word has arrived on my comp this week. Several Asian men are seeking court action concerning the unfair criterea Stockport MBC have adopted. I say unfair because it is obviously so. The recent Employment Tribunal no 2409542/07 found that a criterea for the issue of plates which gave points for lenth of service was obviously unfair because in the Justices words "it gave an unlawful advantage to the white male indiginous cab driver" this disadvantaged Asians and Women who had not been in the trade long enough. Wether you agree with result of the tribunal or not does not matter, it is the Law. Stockport MBC new this when they agreed to the criterea (which was endorsed by ,among others, a Manchester multi owner.)
Stockport have always said if the trade did not agree with them then they would go back to the first decision and totally de-limit.Have the Stockport cab trade fell for a 3 card trick ? Watch this space.

Are those "Asian men" opting for a "scorched earth policy" whereby they feel that if they can't get a plate then mess the whole thing up for everyone else? Looks like it...

Why hasn't Stockport opted for a lottery system? Is it too late for that?

Never too late, but I really hate plate lotteries.
