Basildon: Taxi Driver's Face Ruin?

TAXI drivers fear they face ruin because of plans to let more people enter the trade.

Basildon Council only lets 106 Hackney Carriages - the orange and white vehicles - operate in the district, which has forced the price of licence plates to around £30,000.

Many drivers' retirements rely on them being able to sell the plates at the end of their careers.

But at last night's licensing committee, councillors voted unanimously for the restriction on numbers to be lifted.

Why is it that the scaremongers say that taxi drivers in de-limited areas don't earn a bean?

The vast majority of cab drivers work in de-limited areas, they realise that looking after customers is what earns you a living, not defending the plate premium.

According to DfT stats, there are 350 licensed cab drivers in Basildon, please someone tell me who looks after their retirement?

At last common sense is shared by all members, and you don't have the odd dick-head member trying to make a name for them self.
