Taxi licence zone change debated
Controversial plans to abolish taxi licensing zones in Cornwall are to be discussed. Cornwall Council is considering the move following government advice which states it would improve the supply of taxis and reduce administration costs.
In a public consultation many firms in the county claimed if the zones were abolished their business would suffer because of increased competition. The Licensing Committee will consider the options on 27 November.
The six taxi zones inherited by the council have been operating varying policies. In some areas there was a limit on the number of licences which could be issued and as a result licensed vehicles change hands for large sums of money, in some cases, tens of thousands of pounds.
If the zones were abolished those limits would automatically be scrapped. Some local firms told the public consultation that it would result in a huge influx of new operators and therefore massively increased competition.
The majority of businesses, parish and town councils and members of the public were found to be against the move. The Miscellaneous Licensing Committee will consider the findings of the consultation before making a recommendation to the full council.
