Study to assess taxi availability

Tue 13th Jul 10

The availability of taxis across the borough is set to be studied for the council.

The Royal Borough has limited the number of hackney carriage licences to 96 but it must see if there is any 'unmet demand', under Department for Transport guidance.

Council officers believe demand is being met and that the merging of three taxi zones into one in the borough has given 'flexiblity to the system', according to a report due to be discussed at Tuesday's licensing panel.

"The current position from officers' perspective is that there would appear to be sufficient taxis to cover both the peak hours at Maidenhead Station and to deal with customers leaving late venues in Windsor," the report read.

The independent survey is likely to cost about £10,000.

Maidenhead authority to launch taxi availability survey

14 July 2010

A new study to determine the availability of taxis in Maidenhead is set to be launched.

According to the Maidenhead Advertiser, the council's restriction of hackney carriage licences may mean there is 'unmet demand' from local residents looking for cabs.

The Department for Transport has told the Royal Borough to conduct the survey after the number of licences was limited to 96.

However, a report from the authority showed that council officers believed that demand was being met.

It said: "The current position from officers' perspective is that there would appear to be sufficient taxis to cover both the peak hours at Maidenhead Station and to deal with customers leaving late venues in Windsor."

Council workers believed that after three zones were merged into one, there has been increased "flexibility to the system".

Stroud District Council's taxi regulations also came under review recently, after the authority launched a consultation into the licensing policies of local cab companies last month.
