TAXI drivers were the cause of hundreds of complaints to the regulator in the last year but just a few dozen commendations.

The total number of complaints received by the Commission for Taxi Regulation this year to October 31 was 359.

The highest number of complaints made were in relation to overcharging or fare-related (191). Next were complaints in relation to the conduct and behaviour of a small public service vehicle operator or driver (102). There were 54 complaints relating to the hiring of an SPSV, and 12 relating to the condition of the vehicle.

However, the taxi regulator also received 33 commendations from passengers this year.

The vast majority of commendations relate to the return of lost property. Meanwhile, the Commission for Taxi Regulation said there will be no exceptions to the nine-year rule coming into force in the new year, meaning from January 2011 almost a quarter of all taxi drivers operating in Ireland have to upgrade to a car that is less than nine years old.
