Led to believe City of York survey is in, rumours from good source say more plates may go on after report read/seen. The survey was carried out if I remember on a Thursday and a Saturday which was end of month, payday time. Survey was also carried out at the restrictive Railway Stn GNER rank to which is restricted to a fixed number of hacks,

estimated that on that Saturday night maybe 40, maybe 50, station hacks were working the stn rank, out of the 120 allowed to go in, the same as any other night, it was noted when this survey was carried out on the Saturday it could be seen by passing no entry hacks, the hacks working the stn could not cope with demand, but thats the same in every city on a saturday night ain't it.

But putting more hack plates on will not alleviate the problems with queues on the ranks in the railway stn,[These queues are not just rail passengers they are mainly the public off the streets going for a taxi], it's restrictive, they won't be allowed a permit from the hack company running the show

funny enough I have to drop off in the stn taxi rank area when someone wants to go for a train etc etc, but I can't pick up without a permit, the public are confused

Those people are waiting for the services of taxis, thus if it is not being met it is unmet demand.

The fact that station permits are limited is irrelevant, if more permits were issued then those cars would help meet the station demand, but not the general demand elsewhere.

But wouldn't it be funny if those greedy so and so's actions, who like their little cartel at the station, led to the council de-limiting.

Because it is usually bunged up with Station cabs permit holders waiting to feed into the stn rank,it is used as a feeder, passengers waiting in the stn portico can see you but are reluctant to cross over the busy road to get to you on the off chance that you might not be available or frightened they will loose their place in the portico queue.

with the middle of the road council rank now being removed, moving station taxi permit holders to a private GNER car park rank, lets just add up the cost, at the moment GNER charge £425 or thereabouts, plus this years inflation, plus no doubt GNER will want payment from taxis using the stn car park rank, ie lost revenue from car park fees over a year, think now permits will slowly but surely go to £1000 per permit holder payable to GNER
As far as the Stn rank is concerned for me and quite a few others that rank could be on another planet,

rank still exists but removal is at anytime now, it's only a 6 car rank, 12 car rank inside the GNER rank, overspill maybe up to say another 20 or 30 odd park up on double yellows or bus stops to await their turn to go in,blind eye taken by council, police, traffic wardens, the method of who is in position is done by a "chalk board" method, ie you write your plate number on a chalk board see which plate you follow in, if the cab in front is a radio hack or for that matter the first 4 could be radio hacks and all get pulled off for a radio job confusion sets in whilst you search out who has gone off the chalk board

From the newspaper article:

But Alan Rowley, secretary of the York Taxi Driver Association, said drivers - who could currently use the Station Road rank without charge - would only be able to use the new waiting area if they paid GNER a fee.

"This will create a monopoly for GNER," he claimed, adding that passengers could end up waiting longer for taxis at busy times.

Clearly a case of 'do as I say, not as I do'.

Just got in by post taxi renewal pack, inspection fee £35 , Hack vehicle licence renewal £104, Hack drivers licence renewal £54.
I hear 10 more plates to go on in York on the date of 1 June 05, they will be WAV as from 1 June 05, the following fees will apply as per 1 June 05, Hack vehicle licence £132.00, Hack driver licence £90.00 for new licences.

And also at Ikon(now closed), Gallery and Theatre Royal.

I know this I was talking to the survey guy at Ikon, thing is he had no idea why he was counting cars or what for!

Also the survey at the gallery was a <cough> up because the survey car parked so close to the rank it caused the people q'ing for cars to go the wrong way up the street so they merged with the q to get in the club!

How can you count cars and estimate q size that way?

It is, in my opinion, the planet khan, alls well when the station is busy, they do there work and we do ours, but as soon as no one is in their Q its a simple case of trawling into town like an invading fishing fleet and bam all our work is gone too, every night the ranks in town have station cars, until they get a radio job then they off pulling out the Q to do a job somewhere else.

The fact that this happens often should show York council easily that more plates is not the answer.

I dont know about others but I know what I earn, and I have always worked the same hours from day 1, and its what it was.

More plates would be a killer in the short term.

I know that some PH firms arnt happy either, as they think all drivers will be off for a plate, and the ones that stay will just pick up as and when making running an efficient board a problem.

I'm only a driver, so anything that can reduce my outgoings is a plus for me, and having a free plate would save me a fortune, but a free plate is no good if I then have to compete with 5* the number of cars on the rank.

I think I have the answer.......

XD plates... Xtra demand.

plates that are only valid on set days/times, rest of time its a PH, a kind of upgraded PH plate if you wish.

hows that for an idea?<ducks>

the bloke who counts the taxis doesnt need to know its purpose just do an acurate job.

10 plates will make such a massive difference to takings? I think not

why is it when surveys are done someone always complains its the busiest week?

whenever surveys are done sombody will concoct a reason as to why thats not typical.

GNER need more income to pay thier government fees.
