The council have decided to look at the possibility of having an Unmet Demand Survey carried out at the behest of the trade. This was not fully the view of the forum, but it seems likely that it will happen. The motion has already been put through 2 committes and may have to go to full council for debate and consideration.

The main sticking point is cost. The question is whether the council pay 100% or 50% of the total outlay. Both committees went to the conveners casting vote. So it may be called in.

A questionnaire will be sent to all operators in the district to gauge the desire for or against the survey.

I'll keep you informed.

FOI request to your LO Taxi accounts may show a surplus to fund a survey. It would help them towards NOT showing a profit from the trade? Show them we a nice people to be thinking of them. :) (Not sure how you are with council there but there should also be funding available from the local transport plan if provisions for taxis therein)

The letters are out. Time to gauge the apathy of the trade.

Consultation on issue of taxi numbers and commisioning a taxi survey

1. Are you in favour of the introduction of a limit on taxi numbers? Yes or No

2. If yes, would you still be in favour of a limit if there was a cost element to be shared amongst the taxi trade for an independant specialist survey to assses unmet taxi demand? (50% of the cost will be met by the trade and may amount to £5-£10 per licence)? Yes or No

3. Are you a full time driver? Yes or No

4. Where do you predominantly drive? (please tick all that apply)

Various areas (in table form) followed by Frequently Often Seldom Never

One big error was that they failed to add Grangemouth as an area. A big error as approx 65-70 drivers work in tha area on a frequent basis.

(The above was duplicated and sent to operators with Q3 and Q4 changed accordingly)

Oh, and the replies have to be returned by 7th Oct 2011. (prepaid envelope supplied)

I still think out of 1071 drivers and operators the % of replies will be pitiful.

If they are asking for £5-10 per license then they must be getting the Big Issue seller doing the survey.

Unless they are adding that to drivers licenses, which of course is illegal.

The replies are in and the response was in the region of 47% returned the survey letter and the majority of those have voted to have a survey commissioned. They have also agreed to the payment of 50% of the cost, if said survey goes ahead.

These surveys don't but should take into account the PH impact as well, I've always found their findings to be reasonably accurate though, they do allow for peak times.

Ask them how much extra the survey is going to cost each taxi owner, including the interim surveys.
Then ask what real difference a limit will make since PH can't be limited and not one taxi will be taken off the road.

And considering what happened in Aberdeen, ask the trade if they are prepared to go 100% WAV as the price of a limit.

And ask them who will get the extra licenses should SUD be found?

Cos if it's an existing member of the trade it's not going to meet that SUD.

Doom, clue is in the title of the letter. Taxi and PH provision.

Gusmac, Cost was split 50-50 with council. £7 extra on driver and operator licence for one year only. my renewal was April and additional levy was taken.

Sussex, On a 1 taxi per 1000 people (not sure of source) basis, we have 3 per thousand, + PHV. So if SUD is found someone's made a monumental error somewhere.

Fraid it isn't, last one we had took into account the stations which the HC doesn't have to service unless it wants to pay what is basically an illegal premium for a pass, and also a private owned complex venue rank which isn't large enough and chucks excess cabs out of, neither should be included in any SUD because they choose the service level themselves, we even had the rank moved over to another part because we were "blocking" the road, we weren't but since then there is now 3 abreast PH cars touting blocking the road completely, bottom line is the complex wants to charge us to take their [edited by admin] away, not for me I'm hard at it on a sim for HGV, and if I get my way I will be in an 18 wheeler before long instead of rucking over a £1 ph job.

Brum has one cab or PHV per 142.61 of population.

No wonder we earn SFA!!

1/175 here Brum.

Which still doesn't say anything if only 1/3000 gets a cab anyway.
