No limit on number of cabs in Chichester

A POSSIBLE cap on the number of cabs operating in the Chichester district has been rejected by councillors.

The district’s licensing and enforcement committee unanimously rejected a proposal that a survey should be carried out with licensed hackney carriage operators on the idea of restricting numbers.

Members were told the district council had never limited the number of licences, and there were currently 57.

Some existing licence holders had asked for numbers to be restricted to the present level. The committee heard estimates of the cost of a survey ranging from £5,000 to £12,000.

Cllr Brian Weekes said a cap was unnecessary. “Surely we know whether we have too many on the rank – it is an unnecessary expense to have a survey,” he added. “We should rely on this committee to decide whether there are too many drivers on the ranks.”

Cllr Graeme Barrett said with the potential reduction in bus services, there might be a need for more taxis and Cllr Peter Budge said natural selection made the number of cabs on the road right. “It is going too far to cap someone else’s livelihood,” he added.

Cllr Henry Potter said the number of cabs was self-regulatory to some extent.

“If there is a living to be made out there, people will want to have a taxi,” he said.

Senior technical officer Ian Smith said the number of licences had been slowly increasing in recent years, to the present level of 57.

“The slice of the cake has been getting smaller and smaller for existing drivers, who are having to work longer hours to get the same income,” he said.

Chichester is a village btw, it is about the same size as an average size shopping centre, once again those with get paid anyway jobs on nice little earners show no regard for the common grunt trying to get by.

I wonder how many hackneys they would have if they didn't operate a wav only policy?

And is 57 hackneys for a population of 113,000 too many?

23000

Just shows how many lies you are prepared to tell to get your own way doesn't it?

I'll recind that last line and take it in good faith you didn't realise you'd been reading about 1/3 of Sussex rather than a simple village within it.

I can assure you there aren't 113k of folks living in Chichester, your link says estimated 113k, so are we to believe that a place that has a 1/4 mile high street has bloomed 90k people over the last ten years or would it be fair to say the wiki had a guess on this occasion?

Your link if you look at the map is west sussex not Chichester http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Chich ... or_map.svg

About your council

Chichester District Council covers an area of over 300 square miles of the Western part of West Sussex, bordering Hampshire and Surrey.

And that is the council which licences the taxis.

I did look at the map. Underneath it says:
Description

Map of West Sussex, UK with Chichester district highlighted.

That'll be the red bit.

Oh dear !!!

Mr Doom you must have mistaken the day, as Tuesday is your usual rant a lot of bollocks day.

Chichester District Council covers an area far larger than the City of Chichester, and has a population far larger than the City of Chichester.

Now what did you say about lies? Image

I'll take it you didn't realise that the 57 cabs are licenced for 300 square miles of West Sussex, and not just Chichester.

As the majority of the District is very rural, I do not know of a single Hack that works anywhere other than in the city itself. (pop 23,700 - its a market town /city)

Ther may be only 57 Hacks issued, but the majority are double / triple shifted, which is just about the only way to keep one on the road without working 25/8.

As an example, recently did a twelve hour day shift and grossed £28.00, average is usually only £40-50 a shift during the week, and because the world, his brother, and his dog, come out at the weekends to earn more money, takings are way down overall.

The "Natural selection" refered to means that nobody on the committee gives a monkeys if some poor sod buys a Euro 5 compliant LTI Hack for many thousands (they have just allowed FOUR E7,s to be licenced BTW), plus fees etc, and are very happy to watch them fail and be burdened with a huge debt.

At least our LO tried to highlight the problems we are experiencing, but as the committe members are obviously more in tune with things they rejected his comments - and know better obviously.

A typical caring conservative local government in operation?
