Taxi Workers Group Does Not Want More Cabs In NYC

A study done for a taxi workers group says 900 more cabs in New York City would be a bad thing. The stduy done for the Taxi Workers Alliance says the city's plan to sell 900 more medallions to raise $190 million dollars would add to traffic congestion and cut into drivers wages.

At least they didn't bang on about 'managed growth'.

Scanner that comment is disgraceful.

I think both ways are crap.

But if it's a toss up between the council getting the money for doing nothing, or some lasy sod getting the money for doing nothing, then the former wins hands down.

Actually, I seriously do not see why a council cannot sell a licence. The sell leases to property.

Of course it is only wrong if people can not afford it. But, with todays cost cutting councils then it would be a valid source of income.

I suppose it all depends on the amount they sell them for.

If they sell them for a grand a piece, then the existing trade will not be best pleased. But if they sell them for £50,000, then neither will I. :(

Bollox you just want to keep premiums at any price, and are prepared to stain your council in so keeping

"well councils sell licences for premiums"

its sick, and you are disgracefull.

Hmmmm.. why do you always look on the black side. For instance, if the council sold licenses for say £500 then that would completely wipe out the value of plates in general yet provide an income for the council. I never suggested that a plate be sold for £50,000.

You really must keep your personal grudges to yourself "Whatever Mick"

Bollox, you know it and I know it, a councils job is to issue licences on laid down criterion to protect the public, not fleece them with premiums.

by the way a council is not allowed to profit from licence activities they can only cover thier costs.

it seems scanner in your patch you have managed to get a council to pay the costs and put a decent front on a cartel, its disgracefull.

you say one thing then say another to make it look decent £5 £50 or £500 let alone £5,ooo does not make what you advocate decent which in effect is fleecing the public in cartel city.

premiums are wrong whoever and whatsoever charges it, if a council does it it makes it decent? no.

and then you hit the gutter by saying its "personal" its not personal your idea is abhorant, and needs someone with the guts to stand up and say so.

Funny that, it doesn't seem that long ago since the billionare Mayor of New York was saying that there was a shortage of drivers for then then limited number of cabs (sounds familiar).

So increasing the number of cabs will not change the amount on the road because there will be no more drivers, just the same number driving a large fleet of vehicles.

I believe that NYC is nearly bankrupt - that's the reason for the plate issues and charging for the privilege.

Not bad for the land of the free.

I may be wrong, but since the 1940s the number of medallions in NYC has only increased from around 11.000 to 12,000.

This makes even managed growth seem generous, but there's no unmet demand test or indpendent surveys in NYC!

$190 million divided between 900 drivers thats $211,000 each or about £117,000 in english !!!

would like to see red ken try that in London and see how far he gets...

So what happens when the revenue from "taxi" licensing ammounts to nearly £200,000 per year and the council provide NO dedicated staff.

Seems a bit strange to me that we should swell the councils pockets still further, bearing in mind what we get back.

we have been through this dozens of times b4
the fact remains if you let it happen it will.

mind you 200,000 is nothing frankly it still has to pay for office space, its share of boss wages, reception wages, plates paper postage, testing the list goes on,

but they must near as dammit ballance the budget.

At the moment nothing, we just have to lump it.

But when 'best value' finally gets hold of licensing department, I think things will change.
