Hi guys,

I am about to sit my knowledge next month in Edinburgh so I have been reading about the guy who took the council to court.

Do you think they will deregulate totally in Edinburgh, or just allow more black cabs on the road? Or will it stay as it is?

I am just wondering if this is affecting the value of the plates

I suspect it will effect the price of the plates. I mean do you want to spend 40k on something that could be worthless in a short while?

Its a huge gamble spending that kind of money on a plate but I want to run my own taxi at some point so I can cherry pick the hours I work.

Do you think Edinburgh Council will win any appeal against the judge's decision?

You would be ill advised to invest any money in an Edinburgh plate at this moment in time. There are too many legal imponderables that could render their current policy impotent.

My advice would normally be to wait until there is a clear stabalised policy but that can never happen because the legal framework of continuing such a restricted policy is heavily weighed against them. Aberdeen is a case in point and so is Dundee. Where as Dundee found out the legal hard way Aberdeen has looked at all the evidence for retaining numbers control and it has come up with a report that is heavily in favour of removing restrictions.

Wait and see and don't jump the gun, unless of course you get a deal that is too good to turn down.

I'm not really sure what you mean by deregulate totally?

The current issue is really all about whether to retain numbers control, in which case plates will retain a value, or dump numbers control, in which case plates would become worthless.

Either is a distinct possiblity (and you should heed JD's wise words in this regard), but other radical change is unlikely in the short term, except perhaps allowing alternative wheelchair accessible taxis like the E7 operate.

Fare regulation won't change, and quality controls are likely to be stiffened, if anything.
