When Mr Charles Efford listed his interests at the select committee hearing on the 28th of January 2004 I do believe he forgot to mention "his full family involvement in the Taxi trade". Some may think his interests may disqualify him from making fair judgement. Could that be possible? Just for the record here are his interests. This is a statement he gave in the house of commons on 28th Jan 1998 when discussing the licencing of mini cabs in London: I still have close links with the taxi trade, and I am happy to be a host to some former colleagues in the House today--Mr. Geoffrey Trotter, the chair of the London Taxi Board, and Mr. Phil Warren, who has written some books of note on the licensed taxi trade. My sister is also a licensed London taxi driver, as was our grandfather, so I have close links with the industry. I am still a badge-holding London taxi driver, although I no longer ply my trade. I am also a former member of the London Taxi Board, which supports the Bill. I could speak for a day on the industry but, lest I be misinterpreted, I must make it clear that I do not intend to talk out the Bill or oppose it today. Best wishes. John Davies Manchester |
